Have an 07 jeep Commander with good tread for the moment. In the meantime I'm planning for a lift. I have some coins saved up for a lift kit but want to do everything at once there. The tires, springs, shocks, chirpping U joint, and such so while researching I wanted to find a good height that gives me head clearance,a and yes the hydraulic trunk hatch is pushing it all the way but it doesn't clear my head by about 3.5" needed. (I'm 6'3") Stupid question: Would a lift kit of that height be a direct lift for the trunk too? I.e Would I need a 3.5" lift or 2"lift with larger tires? Would it look weird with such a gap on a 3.5" lift? I can post pics of current tires when I get home.
Hello. I just installed a 2 inch lift kit and went to 31" tires pretty much doing what you are asking about. The 2 inch kit I installed was more of a leveling kit, 2" in the front and 1.25" in the back so it changed the rake of the Commander and didn't actually raise the back of the vehicle that much. I don't think a basic 2" lift with bigger tires would get you all of the head room you are looking for.
On a side note I also just ordered new lift gate struts because mine don't open fully anymore. Have you looked to see if its possible to order lift gate struts that would push the hatch open a bit more?
Basically all lifts level out the vehicle. So The front end is lifted more than the rear. Most lifts are in the range of 2-3" front and 1.5-2" rear lift. If you go from stock size tires to a 32" (typical budget boost tire size) you will gain 1.5" of height from the tires. That puts you right around where you want to be it sounds like.
3.5" lift isn't really available, and yes it would look kind of funny with stock tire size and a lift.
I have a ~2" rear lift and 32" tires and @ 5'10 I have tons of head clearance. You are 5" taller though, not sure I have more than 6" head clearance.
My lift gate struts actually got delivered so I put them on and checked my own suggestion. Longer struts will not increase the headroom noticablly, it is already near its limit.
