Hello!! Intro

Hey everyone, thanks for the space! I just picked up a 2006 Limited, 5.7, Quadra-Drive with a bad engine @ 130k for $1200. I was browsing old Cherokee on CL for a fun 4wd weekend toy to take hiking/camping/kayaking,etc when I came across this Commander. I don't know the first thing about Jeeps, or the commander, but it looked nice and had a lot of neat features so I figured why not. I am able to start and drive the thing but it smokes like all heck so I figure either a head gasket or more likely a dropped valve seat. I hope to start tear down later this week, or the following. I'm hoping I can get by with just a new head and piston kit, but time will tell.

Here she is:

Edit: Unable to post my image links

I look forward to posting more, and learning along the way!

John

Welcome! Well, for not knowing anything about Commanders, you seem to have gotten one of the top of the line models. As for the engine, there's a shop in Elon, NC (IIRC) called hemiPros that will do a full swap with a remanufactured Hemi for around $3500. That comes with a 3yr/36K warranty. Whwn my Hemi goes, that's where I'm taking it. Best of luck!

06 Limited Hemi QDII
CBEngineering Coilover Lift Kit, tie rod ends, U+L rear control arms, RRO front UCAs, adjustable track bar, JKS QD sway bar links, Steel Armadillo diff cover and A/C armor, 4xGuard full Matrix, rock sliders, rear sliders, and belly guard, Wilco Offroad Hitchgate, all riding on ProComp Series 29 17x8.5 wheels with 265/70r17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers

.45ACP...because shooting twice is just, well, silly.

Welcome to the forum NC_Commando.

Even with a bad engine, $1,200 is a steal if the body and the interior are in good shape and from the look of those pics, you scored.

Read the below thread and you will learn quite a bit about Jeep Commanders - lots of good information in it.

Looking to Buy

Rick, thanks for the heads up. I looked into them and I'll definitely be going to them if I need a long block. Fortunately I have the tools and space to do the swap, so I can save some cash there, but the peace of mind of a 'good' engine vs a questionable junkyard pull-out is well worth their prices.

I'm surprised how good of condition the vehicle is in, which is why I purchased it over a cherokee. There are a few broken things here and there, but being that its from a family with kids, I'm not really surprised. I'll have to see how the rest of the truck is once I can actually put some miles on it. Hopefully there aren't a bunch of abs/srs/transmission issues that I'm unaware of just yet.

Well I started my tear down tonight. Compression checked out good and consistent in all cylinders but cylinder 1,which was zero. This was no surprise as that plug was destroyed. I got the intake manifold off and sure enough I can see right past of valve. I'm going to pull the head off and see how bad it is but I'm not sure if I'll be able to swap the Piston because the front differential is all in the way. More to come...

If it was me, personally, I'd buy a new rebuilt Hemi direct from Chrysler and dump it right in.

Give them the old block - that should help keep the cost down a little, because I know budget can be a factor.

Then you know you have nothing to worry about with the engine for years to come.

Here are the pics of the plug and the gap between valve/head.
