whining noise only when pushing gas pedal

I have a 2007 Jeep Commander and it started making a whining noise 2 days ago. It sounds like it is coming from the front and only happens when I accelerate. I can put it in park and rev the engine and still hear the noise, not instantly, but after a few seconds of pushing on the gas pedal. What could this be?? I am hoping nothing major! I have read on other threads about low power steering fluid causing the noise, but I just checked it and it's full. I am a woman and nervous about taking it in somewhere before I figure out a few things that it could be...I have learned my lesson before and they always tell me that things are wrong when they are not. Thanks!

I think you will end up having a mechanic actually hear the sound.
Checking the power steering level was a good start.
Low transmission oil level can cause a whine as well but I believe only the 3.7 and 4.7 versions have a dipstick....the Hemi requires a special dipstick the dealer uses and a specific proceedure must be followed.
The hope, of course, is a low fluid level but if that is the case.....where'd it go?
Hence, reliable diagnostics.
Either fluid level could be correct but the noise is a forwarning to a pump failure, either power steering or the front transmission pump.
But remember, this info is specific to a pump whine....there are other things that can mimic the sound, like a water pump failing.

So, I wish I could offer better suggestions but I suspect you will need another pair of ears to diagnose correctly.

Robby, it's the 3.7 that doesn't have the dipstick and is dealer serviceable only. The 4.7 and HEMI DO have dipsticks.

I thought it was the 3.7 liter too. Its funny though because my friends 05 Grand Cherokee with the 3.7 liter has a tranny dipstick. I know its not a Commander but the same engine/tranny is used in the Commanders.

They might have made the change with the '06 models.

Is it a Hemi? A friend of mine that has a Hemi pickup makes the same noise, and says it's a Hemi thing, they all make it.. Also what the dealership told him. Mine makes it in park and you rev it,and when your driving you hear it..

My vote is the idler pulley or water pump. I have an 06 with a Hemi. I had a similar noise. Mine was the idler pulley. Remove your serpentine belt and start spinning the pulley's by hand and see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from.

Good luck
