Redhouse 12-04-2006, 09:59 PM Anyone install an aftermarket setup yet? I want to change out the head unit, speakers and install a sub and some amp's.
Also, what's with the aux input on the factory radio, I plugged my iPod into it and only got mono.
rubicontrail.net 12-05-2006, 05:25 AM Does your plug have stereo male connectors on either end?
Redhouse 12-05-2006, 03:53 PM The cable I used has a 1/8 plug on both sides, it would be nice if they had aux RCA's.
Anybody have the instructions for taking the dash and doors apart. I used to do custom installs and I have built a few award winning projects, like my Dodge Magnum.
What I plan on doing as of now, is installing Alpine's flag ship deck with iPod hook up. Memphis Audio M Class speakers in the front and back and MB Quart tweeters in the dash. Then, I'm going to build a box for the back that will fit the space behind the seats when the 3rd row is up and then when it's down, have it against the 2nd row. The Box will house one Rockford P3 sub and a Rockford amp all built into the box flash. I love Music and listen to Blues, Rock and Jazz and I build my systems for audio quality, not monster bass.
I would love to see what other guys have done.
IDJ5I 12-05-2006, 06:00 PM just installed my subs over the weekend... they are banging they are soooo loud and the amp is turned only halfway up ... i also installed the ipod integration... by the way... tints are a must!:p
Redhouse 12-05-2006, 06:15 PM I agree 100% about the tint's. What kind of sub's did you go with and how did you install them? I'm very open for ideas. :D

Then you should be getting stereo audio.

Are your 12's in a standard sub box or some sort of custom enclosure. I don't see how anyone could hold a 12" sub in the space behind the 3rd row seat while it is up. Do you have to leave it down all of the time?
Redhouse 12-06-2006, 01:07 PM Then you should be getting stereo audio.
I know it should, I wasn't sure if the stock radio aux was mono. I never messed around with one before. It don't matter anyway, by this weekend it will be out and the Alpine will be in.

There is enough room to have one 12 or two in a box in that space with the seat up. The box needs to follow the seat's angle and then flat with the door. If you run the 36" across you have enough air space for two 12's. The Rockford P3 12 will fit in a box this shallow and it will pound, I'll have my box done by this weekend I hope, if all the parts make it.

I changed out all of my stuff. I just had the base system. Put in an Alpine CDA 9856 head unit with the XM modulator. Went with the Alpine SPS 6x9 for front door, Alpine Type R 6 1/2 for rear door, and for the dash I used the Blaupunkt Overdrive Series ODx352 3-1/2" 2-way car speakers (which I think have been discontinued). Doors are easy enough to pop off. You'll need to pull the flap up behind the door handle and undo that screw and I think just one other. Then pop the door off. The dash grills just pop right off, so they are easy to get to. System sounds much better! I've contemplated putting in a sub, but I wanted it to be out of the way and hidden....which isn't easy in this vehicle.
Redhouse 12-07-2006, 08:09 AM Thanks for the info on the dash and doors. :D
I'm going with the CDA9857 and the Memphis M Class speakers. I'm not a fan of 2 1/2 or 3 1/2's, IMHO you can get a much better soundstage by going with a good set of tweeters, so I going to make a bracket and install some MB Quart tweeters and there should be enough space to hide the crossover in there. I hear ya about sub's, there really isn't a good place to install them hidden, no room under the seats, anything. So building a nice clean box is the best bet, if your not going for over the top.
I'll post some pictures of everything when I'm done this weekend.

I have the third row down because im 16 and will never utilize that space so i have a custom box that contours with the backs of the 2nd row seating... i tried to take pictures and post them but i cant figure out how to post pics from my comp... if any1 can explain.. please help so i can show my mods and sub/amp setup! thanks

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/Redhouse-Home-Theater/Dash2.jpg
Here's the new Alpine 9857, this is one very cool deck with high speed iPod connection. Alpine has really done an awesome job working with Apple to get it right.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/Redhouse-Home-Theater/Alpine.jpg
This is really the number one reason I go aftermarket, look at these cheap P.O.S. speakers from the factory. On the left the factory and on the right the Memphis M-Class 6 1/2's with crossovers.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/Redhouse-Home-Theater/6.jpg
I'll post more pictures tomorrow night after I finish the install. I built the box and it's a no go. In order to have a box in there with the third row up you will have to have a small 10 inch sub with a depth no more then 6 inches to fit in a box small enough. The problem is that any sub that will fit that, will give you weak bass at best and the box being on the small side you run into the need to deaden it, because it will be to live. Since I'm about 100% audio quality and don't plan on using the third row, I built a box for a 12" Rockford
P3 the will fit up against the 2nd row with the amp built into the box for a cool look.
ShinyBlackHEMI 12-10-2006, 12:47 PM I'd like to see many, many pics after your setup is complete. Keep us posted! I'm excited :)

Here's the Alpine in the dash.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/Redhouse-Home-Theater/AlpineDash.jpg
One thing I really would like is to find a dash piece to bring the sliver trim look up around the Alpine.
Redhouse 12-10-2006, 07:44 PM Here's the Sub installed, the amp is mounted flush inside the box. You don't see any wires anywhere, everything is tucked away.
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/Redhouse-Home-Theater/Sub.jpg
I have everything hooked up and it sounds awesome, between the Alpine and Memphis M-Class speakers everything sounds they way it should, guitars sound like guitars, vocals are right on and the soundstage is right front and center where it should be and the Sub really blends in perfect. Really nice Bass for Blues, Rock and Jazz and then I can turn it up and play some Rap or House Music and it pounds. The Alpine has great Bass management and it allows you to fine tune the audio for Stereo, CD and iPod and saves custom settings for each. Tomorrow I'll take some pictures of the iPod hook up and dash speakers and better shots of the Deck and Sub.
ShinyBlackHEMI 12-10-2006, 07:51 PM Do you think it's worth hooking up subs with my factory headunit? I have a beautiful 7'' Kenwood excelon that was out of my previous WJ laying around, but i have a commander with nav, sirius and backup camera. Does the factory headunit put out enough power to even handle two Alpine Type R's?
Redhouse 12-10-2006, 08:25 PM I'm not a fan of doing that, the factory head unit and speakers just don't have enough power and when you run a sub with the factory setup it almost always over powers the stock speakers.
If you want to do it, you'll need something like this,
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-weKzWw3HhWY/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=721&I=101PL2
You have splice into the rear speaker wires at the head unit and then run some wire off them into this and RCA's to the amp. This little unit has adjustable gain so you might be able to get it to work out ok.
Redhouse 12-11-2006, 01:52 PM I was talking to a friend who owns a shop today and he told me about this unit,
http://www.alpine-usa.com/en/products/product.php?model=PXE-H650
With this, you guys with the Nav, sirus, back up cam can keep the factory setup and change out the factory speakers and add some amp's and subs and this thing will give you all the sound and control to make it sound like a high end Alpine system. Rockford Fosgate also makes something like it and I have heard it's really nice.
ShinyBlackHEMI 12-11-2006, 04:45 PM thanks alot, if i can do this and get away with not having to switch the HU i'm set. thanks for the heads up. Also, was it you whom said it is possible to run subs with the 3rd row up? Has anyone got pictures of this?
Redhouse 12-11-2006, 07:25 PM Your welcome.
You can run a box back there, the problem is, it's going be small and it limits you to a 8" or 10" Sub that has no more then 6" in depth mounted in the box. For that kind of Bass, you could just go with a Bazooka Sub, it would fit.
Iowa Commander 12-17-2006, 02:21 AM Here are some pictures of my Aftermarket set up. I retained the factory deck for the stealth look. I removed the 3rd row seat completely and utilized the seat cavity for the speakers and 2 amps, the amps are on a shelf and the crossovers and the sound processor are underneath. It’s all covered by a 3/4 inch cover on linear actuators to raise and lower it. Steel mesh is recessed in the wood and carpeted offer so it plays through and you can still crawl across it. The sun visor monitors are tied into the rear dvd/tv, video enhancers were installed to retain picture quality. I ran into heat issues with the amps, I used the rear air and a home made manifold system to cool them. Installed a temp and volt meter in the dash, used the little cubby hole in front of the gear selector, mounted tinted plexi and put the meters behind it.

Hey Iowa,

Redhouse 12-17-2006, 03:37 PM Iowa Commander, that's awesome! Very nice install and very clean, I really like it. I built the box for now, until I find a clean way to do something with the third row still in and get enough bass. If we weren't going to use the third row every once in a while, I'd take it out too.
I use Photobucket.
my2003r1 12-18-2006, 12:11 AM Redhouse,
Did you have the Boston Acustic or just the regular. I like the sound of the Boston up front but the rear doors suck I think. Thanks for any input.
Dave
Iowa Commander 12-18-2006, 02:02 AM The 3rd row seat was a piece of cake, about 20 minutes. You just need to remove that jack cover and the jack and the plastic under the jack. From there its easy.
On the install I have to give the credit to Stereo West in Omaha Nebraska. They worked with me for months and emails me pictures as it progressed. (I am in Iraq) They had alot of creative ideas. As far as other locations, they removed my entire enterior and hushmatted it in addition to the factory insulation, there was no free space anywhere!! They jeep is all very well compacted.
I did have the Bostons, like you the front doors sounded great but the backs were kind of lacking. Did you know the doors actually have 6x9's in the front?
Here are some more pictures.

From left to right, Factory 6x9 front doors, little one from the dash and and the far right is a 6" (I think)

Heres the door with the factory insulation, this is the limited, not sure if the others are different.

Here is the hushmatt behind the factory insulation

New on the right, old on the left. I put 6" in all 4 doors, there rears have the tweeter in the center of the speaker and in the front the tweeter is in the dash as a seperate.
Iowa Commander 12-18-2006, 02:06 AM Ok, I'm a retard, on the last picture, the new one is on the left and the old ones the right.. I also recently ordered my 4" Superlift and new wheels and tires. I ordered the same wheels and tires as the ones pictured on superlifts website on their Commander. :-)

I had the regular 6 speaker setup, after experiencing the Boston speakers in the Dodge Magnum I didn't want to waste my time with them in the Commander. It's sad to see what they charge for the Boston's and then they give you something no better then the factory speakers. When you can go aftermarket and for much less, get way more in audio quality. If you really want a huge jump in audio quality, change out the 6x9's in the front doors, the 3 1/2's in the dash and the 6 1/2's in the back doors with something aftermarket and you'll be blown away in the difference. If you do the back doors, you'll need a Chrysler mounting adapter for the 6 1/2's.

I have absolutely no problem with the audio quality on the Boston Acoustics. They are some of the best speakers I have heard. I have heard the speakers in a Lexus GS and think they sound tinny. The speakers in my Cherokee were awful. The Bose speakers in the Acura's sound pretty good.

If you like it, that's all that matters.
The thing that should piss off anybody that paid extra for the Boston setup is, if you look at the pictures in this thread you will see that the Boston speakers are the same paper cone crap that the factories are, with only a bigger magnet, your paying a high price for cheap speakers. Their one way speakers with a very limited frequency range in the low and mids. For less money you can buy an aftermarket speaker from Alpine, Memphis, Rockford, MB and bunch other company's, that will out perform the Boston's hands down and cover the full audio range.

Today, I started designing a box that will be installed into the back of the third row seat and when finished it will have the one 12" Rockford P3 and the amp built in and finished off so it looks and works just like the seat. I'm just trying to decide if I want to cover over the subs and amp so that all you see is the back of the seat, or let the sub and amp show, cut out into the seat.

True dat! I thought the Infinity Gold package in the Grand was better than the BA....and that's not saying alot. I had a Grand with the Infinity package and repeatedly blew out the dash speakers. $98 bucks to replace those cheap paper speaks....I don't think so. My sister bought a Grand with the BA package and it doesn't come close in comparison to the aftermarkets I've got in my Commander. "Premium" audio packages from the manufacturers are typically way overpriced and not very good quality.
kfbagt 12-19-2006, 08:35 AM Those pics are great. I love how the set-up is concealed. May be it will keep someone from breaking in.
Iowa Commander 12-21-2006, 02:03 AM Regarding bigger pictures I cant seem to get anything any bigger on there, if you go to the top right hand corner and send me your email by private message I'll be glad to send you pics.
The stealth install was the biggest obsticle, I went with them 4 kicker 8's becasue of the depth requiments and the size. I was reluctant of a square speaker but I have to admit, I cant tell the difference and with the Commander being a box on wheels they seem to fit the vehicle. I had overheating problems on the amps, made a manifold to use the rear AC to cool the amps, put a volt/temp gage up front. The "lid" is motorized and can not be opened from the enterior of the vehicle period, its all strong enough you cant "peak" inside. The only way is by keyfob or by destroying it. The only aftermarket item visible to the naked eye is the 12V plug to the left of the shifter is now a base knob for the sub amp, very descrete.

I agree, and was very suprised to see this. One advantage of the upgraded system is the amp, which lets you take advantage of the higher end speakers. Maybe this is why there is no Boston Acoustic sineage on the vehicle? BA aftermarket stuff is awesome, dont know what this stuff is, maybe it is just a license use of the name?

A lot of people are shocked when they see the pictures, or are standing in a shop looking face to face at these cheap speakers they paid so much for.
When I got my Dodge Magnum, it was one of the very first made and I was the first person I know of that took apart the stereo and went aftermarket. I built a box into the floating floor using the top of the floor as the top of the box and it looks stock, enough so, that while at a car show that summer a guy approached me from Dodge and really wanted to take a closer look at how it was done. With the Commander, it sucks because their is really no room to do anything cool, with out taking out the third row or loosing the spare and cutting the floor and building a box. With this being a everyday family ride, being a family of four we will need the third row every once in a while.
I'm starting a fiberglass box that will house two 10" Rockford P3's, the amp and be carpeted in the factory carpet to match what's in the Commander already. It will give me a good amount of bass and fit with the third row up, so you won't see it from outside, I should be done by mid next week.
Iowa Commander 12-25-2006, 10:37 PM Ok, I think I got this whole bigger pictures thing figured out, Hopefully this works and I can send some pics when the 4" lift is complete.

bravo2376 12-26-2006, 02:19 AM Wow, that's some nice work. So you can still use the back end for cargo or what have ya with the lid down right?
Great Pics of the interior, better then the Jeep catalogs provide. Thank you. john
Iowa Commander 12-26-2006, 06:41 AM Thanks for the compliments, I hope to get more pictures next time I am in the states, when I get home the lift should be done, I hope to have some good pictures of that to. My last Jeeps cargo area was used up with subwoofers and I decided I would never do it again. Well when I decided to do it this way part of the deal was cargo space retention. There is steel mesh routered into the wood with carpet over it. I had the system installed and they did 2 other jeeps for me so they new I was anal. I told them to put all there weight on their knee and kneel onto the mesh, if they fell through then I wanted it different, Sooooooo its totally functional and the sound surprisingly plays through it, when you lift the lid I really cant tell the difference other than the amps running cooler, they run about 137 with the lid down and the rear air on, before the air was piped into them they overheated at about 145-150 and shut down. I'm attaching a video, I hope it works.

ShinyBlackHEMI 12-26-2006, 07:21 AM Absolutely amazing. That is by far the sweetes setup ive seen yet. Also, how did you go about adding those visor monitors? Did you have to cut them apart or does somewhere like vizualogic make replacements?

Krusha29 12-28-2006, 02:50 AM Yo Iowa Commander, thats a sweet ride you have. I think you should put a lift kit on it. Then it would be the SH!!!!!TTTT. One question I have for you, with all that sound power can you even hear anymore? LOL.:D
Ak Commander 01-17-2007, 11:37 PM Iowa Commander: Just read the thread. Great job. I love truly love stealthness of your install.
I too am one of those disappointed by the sound quality of the speakers. After looking at them in your pics, I can see why! They must be using the Boston Acoustics name under licensing agreement only. If I were BA I would have a tough time having my name associated with those.....and they (BA) are supposed to be a high end manufacturer? All I can say is,.....is......., wow.
I have a limited, and my options for upgrade are limited, though I understand there are some items on the market now to make things easier to switch out. Initially I thought it would be (from what I was told) hard to change head unit, speakers, etc, because of the BUS used. I am still learning about the system and researching ways to effectively change the system without losing my steering wheel controls.
I had an older Landcruiser which I had changed the system in (Alpine head unit, infinity kappa component speakers, amp, woofer, etc) and the difference in sound is like night and day comparing that system to my Commanders. I thought I would be getting more for my money. But I guess it is what it is. I am more into Clarity/quality/richness of sound than the boom of it. You can tell the difference when you listen to the same CD in each vehicle (I had my Commander and the Landcruiser with the system mentioned previously at the same time) and you could hear notes or instruments in one vehicle and you can't hear them in the other. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but I expected a heck of a lot more for my 40G's.
Again, Great job. Thanks for posting pics for us.

I used the factory visors and just had the holes made a little bigger. They did come with remotes to turn them on and off and adjust picture quality. I hope nobody minds all the pictures. Check em out
I know where somebody's tax free income, deployment hazardous duty pay is going.... :D I just want to know where do you have the free time to be on the internet, coordinate such great work on your vehicle?? We were lucky to get 1-2 hours a week for internet.... And during OIF/OEF 1, nothing but old fashioned mail and some siprnet, but for the first 7 moths we were slummin. Heck, I slept on the Hood of my 998 for the first 8 months.
It's awesome that you are able to steer this, from where you are, and will enjoy it when you get back.
I will dump some $$ into my commander when I get back from my next fun filled trip (probably pop smoke July), but nothing as cool as you did with the Stereo. My list: Rock Krawler 3" Lift, Nitto Rims/tires, 4Xguard Skids/sliders, Bullbar/lights, Intake & Exhaust, maybe some other small things here & there.

Iowa Commander 02-06-2007, 12:00 AM Sorry for the delayed responses, I was between countries, Iraq and the US. I appreciate the good words, the stereo is still jammin, I was home recently and was able to enjoy it. If you need any more pics or anything let me know.
Redhouse 02-06-2007, 02:21 PM I can not find the Medium Khaki carpet to cover my box for nothing, nobody has it, even with the guys who sell molded carpet's.
jpar721 03-07-2007, 10:03 AM Thanks for sharing pics.
another chris 03-07-2007, 10:42 AM Damn you have some money sunk into your rig, it definitely looks well worth it all all though. We need a thumbs up smiley!
cant_get_ryte 03-29-2007, 04:15 PM nice setup iowa, beautiful job on the actuator work as well. the finish work is great. im heavy into car stereo as well, but I pick my truck up after a year in korea on the 9th ;) about as far as ive decided is ID mini horns, mids are still up in the air, I have a tdx 15 but looking at another custom tc9 possibly like my max, works in less than 1 cube for the twelve
big staff.
Tristan 03-30-2007, 07:03 PM Anyone have any experience with Clif Designs speakers or know anything about them? I found some on sale and was considering them. I want Polk but i'm trying to save a little cash for a better HU.
cant_get_ryte 04-01-2007, 12:36 PM never heard of them. you have a specific brand your looking for? i still have a couple of my accounts open. if you want to check feedback on me i have some pages on other sites you can check up at as well as my ebay.

Tristan 04-02-2007, 06:05 AM I was originally going for Polk db's but they don't fit into the budget. I saw the Clif Designs on sonicelectronix (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/index.php) for a good discount, but just wasn't sure about them since I havn't heard of them either.
My overall plan is:
Alpine CDA-9883 HU
Intigrate Ipod and XM into that
Replace F&R speakers
and put my sub & amp back in from my last truck

prudemonkey 06-21-2007, 01:32 PM Just reading this thread for the first time and I am blown away! Iowa, that thing is sweet - if I remember correctly, weren't you selling the Commander? Anyway, love the setup. I need the rear seat about once a month, so that wouldn't work in my house, but I am glad to see you keeping cargo space back there.
Since I am so late to this thread, someone asked about Clif Design - I used to work at an Audio Shop, and we used CD in a ton of higher end applications. I have been out of car audio for nearly 10 years now, and I see that CD is hard to find. 10 years ago, I would have recommended anyone to Clif Designs, but since I haven't heard any of the new stuff, it may be better you steered clear. I still have a CD component set of a 6.5 and 1" tweeter sitting in my workshop along with miscellaneous other audio pieces. Maybe I will get to use some of them when I start the audio portion of this thing!
Tristan 06-22-2007, 10:15 AM I did end up going with the CD speakers, and am very happy with them! I originally got them because the site I was looking at had a great sale on them, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try them. They are a HUGE improvement over stock, and in conjunction with the Alpine HU I have never had a better sounding system the what I have now.
