jrdale8 03-30-2006, 06:02 PM Alright I need some thoughts from you and or the mrs. We got the jc to get my wife out of being a minivan mom. She is turning 30 and I attempting to dress the commander up a little. Got the front windows tinted, added factory fogs, getting sunroof put in monday. Anyway she really likes her new ride. She wants to get a dvd player put in b4 our family vacation in summer. It would be for the kids and me since she gets car sick in the back. We also have spoke about putting aftermarket wheels on it. do I bite the bullet and spend $2400 on wheels and tires or go with $1000 on mobile video?
NW Skier 03-30-2006, 06:10 PM Go for the video. Works great to keep the rug rats occupied. The wife and kids will be happy, you can enjoy the video, and dream about the wheels.:D
pwloomi 03-30-2006, 06:33 PM I say to do some shopping for lower priced mobile video and do both. I have seen some at places like SAM'S CLUB that have 2 7" screens and they are just over $200.
If I had to choose between one, keep the factory wheels and keep the kids entertained.
JoeTampa 03-30-2006, 11:07 PM I have also chosen the route of the portable DVD player for my daughter's use, and like it over a factory package for a few reasons:
1. Can be removed and taken into a hotel or wherever - both for security and so that it can be watched.
2. MUCH less money than the factory alternative.
3. My daughter can change DVDs and press "Play" all by herself - it's hands off for Mommy and Daddy.
Haags 03-31-2006, 05:46 AM I agree - go with the Video. I have two little ones and it is invaluable on long trips. The only downside is that they want to watch it every time you get in the car. It's tough having to listen to "Elmo in Grouchland" every morning on the way to work, when I'd rather be blasting the satellite radio!
I'll never understand paying $2500 for new wheels, when the ones that came on the Jeep are pretty sharp-looking, and the upgrade is purely asthetic (in most cases). I'd get the video, then use the extra money to go on a nice road trip to Disneyworld. You're kids will be entertained the entire trip!
maximo 03-31-2006, 06:50 AM Allright i'll play the avodocate. Get the rims and tires. 85 percent of the commander owners will keep the stock rims and tires on it. Your will be set apart. Nothing nicer than seeing a tastefully done commander rollin on the streets. My thinking on the dvd player. I have one in my shed I never installed. Many parents are getting away from training their children and teaching them daily. Most will let tv's and video's do it for them. When I'm on the road with my daughter their is nothing better then showing her neat sites, scenic views, a talking to her. I think the Dvd is a quick fix to peace and quite, however it may have long term effects. Growing up on family vacation, their was nothing better then family interaction. maximo

Like "Be quiet, adults are talking!" or "Stop touching your brother!" or "Don't make me come back there!"

:D :D :D Hahahahahahahah!!!
I am stuck myself between both demons.

Kids wont wear the headphones?
nutsnbolts 04-01-2006, 05:40 PM Right, make them wear headphones.
rwall43 04-02-2006, 06:30 AM Go for the DVD player. It is worth it's weight in gold when it comes to sanity on a road trip.
Get the rims later or be a good internet shopper and get both if you can find deals that allow this.
Good luck.
ps PAC you are my new hero. Please promise to never change the GIF that plays with your signature. :)
Haags 04-03-2006, 12:59 PM Right, make them wear headphones.
That is the plan, but the two-year-old won't keep them on. Maybe in a few months...
Faustus 04-03-2006, 01:20 PM ... before I had the DVD system, my teenagers listened to the books on tape (cd) that I borrow for free from my public library. I could not drive anywhere on my longer trips without them. However, having two independent systems is nice, as I can continue listening while they can stop, sleep, play … and continue when need be. If you do not want to get a DVD, try the books on tape … available as well at Cracker Barrel against a small fee.
walkjon 04-03-2006, 02:47 PM ....and before there was books on tape there were books and all the silly little travel games we used to play. We also looked out the windows and actually saw interesting thinks when we would travel.
Times sure have changed.
nutsnbolts 04-03-2006, 09:28 PM Welcome to the new world.
Before you had to crank up the car, what happened to the carburators? Hemi engines, automatic windows oh my!
maximo 04-04-2006, 12:30 PM It funny this world has even got this far without dvd players, headphone etc. maximo
jrdale8 04-11-2006, 02:51 PM Maximo wins, I ordered the wheels 20" diablo lionharts with 275/45/20 Kuhmos
Diablo wheels are machined to order and therefore will fit the JC. What a pain in neck vehicle to find wheels for. Will post some pics once put on. Working some overtime this holiday weekend so maybe the video is closer then I planned
