Stalling Issues with 06 5.7 Hemi Commander

Hey all,

Recently we have been experiencing issues with our 06 Jeep Commander 4x4 limited 5.7 HEMI. It has been stalling while coming to a stop at a traffic light or stop sign.

I have read most of the posts here about this issue but it seems like it is more common with the 4.7 engine.

Does that recall that Jeep did cover the 5.7 or just the 4.7?

Anyone help from someone on this issue would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

How many miles on your 06? Do you know the maintenance history?

My '06 4.7 commander has stalled out twice this last year. It has only happened after stopping at a stop sign. Ill get back up to about 10mph and it just quits. Itll start back up fine but im stranded for a minute in the middle of the road.......it shouldnt do this.

Hey all,

Thanks for the responses. My jeep has still been stalling as of late in the cold weather.

In park, it NEVER stalls. It idles just fine.
However, put it into drive, and while coming to a stop, it will stall.
It always starts up again but this is really frustrating.

Sudden stops always equal a stall
A longer, slower stop, usually the jeep will dip to 300 rpm but then catch itself and go back to around 500 rpm and not stall.

Thanks!

I too am having the same problems with my 2007 5.7L Hemi Commander Overland. My jeep is at the dealership AGAIN for this problem. They can not find out what is wrong with it. Since the numerous stalling episodes are not throwing a code, they have decided to replace the electronic module and see if this corrects the problem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I do not feel safe driving this vehicle with this problem.

Have you checked the air cleaner? I don't know how many miles, but if it were me, I'ld be thinking about spark plugs or maybe a trip to the dealer/mechanic.

Just to comment on this, I believe that the issue resides in the ignition switch under the dash. Our 2006 4.7L stalls ALL the time. We've had it into the dealership so many times and nothing has ever changed. Going back to why we believe it's the ignition switch system under the dash: I was driving down the highway at 60MPH, probably on the road for about 3 hours, and I went to adjust the seat and hit my knee just under the dash where the keys are located. Almost instantly, the jeep lost power (radio stayed on) and we nearly were killed. We complained to the dealership and they stated that it would be $90 bux to reflash the computer. If we took it in every time, I bet I would end up spending at least $180 every 3 months on this issue.

I had a 2003 Dodge Ram with a Hemi that stalled on me a few times after I bought it new. I can't remember if there was a TSB for it but I had the dealer flash the ECM (or PCM?) with the latest version and it never occured again.

pcv valve? my sister had a nissan that had a similar problem and it turned out to be the idle air control valve, but i havent heard of that problem with the hemi

stalling problem in 5.7L TOO!

After my 5.7L Hemi recently had an issue with stalling and instrument panel flashing I looked up the recall and it was only for the other engine sizes so I contacted Chrysler asking what the deal was when clearly it was an issue with the 5.7 as well. Below is part of their response. So anyone that has the issue please make a complaint. And keep reciepts from any work you have had done. If they do recall they will reimburse you. Thanks!

The electrical problem you are experiencing with your vehicle has been
documented in your file. You can also contact the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to make a complaint. If NHTSA
receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it
finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a
recall and remedy campaign. (888) 327-4236 or www.nhtsa.gov

If you check TSB's, etc, and Assuming the problem is NOT ignition switches or TSB's related, keep in mind; As well with the air filter and spark plugs, using higher then recommended octane gasoline contributes to harder starting and stalling when the motor is cold in very cold weather. Use the recommended Octane fuel for your vehicle, NOT higher, higher octane fuels do NOT atomize as well, especially in cold weather, and if your motor is tuned to use a lower octane its expecting better fuel atomization when the motor is cold in cold temperatures.

Check your owners manual, ignition cables wear out, mine says to replace the cables at 60k miles, if your's does also and you have more than 60k miles or 5 years on the vehicle, old worn ignition cables could be contributing to the problem.

The 5.7L doesn't have ignition cables; has what they call, coil packs. I had done a complete tune-up w/ OEM plugs w/ it's corrected gap settings, as well as changed out the PCV and air filter. It started to have problems after the dealership had pretty much fixed the tranny leak I had via under extended warranty.

Mine stalls when you back out of a garage especially, roll down a slight incline, and then shifting from R to D, is when it'll stall. Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this? Please let me know asap!

Just got the XK back today, after almost a week at the dealership. This time, the technician is 'suspecting' a problem w/ the Purge Solenoid... finding traces of gas leaking in it, apparently. We'll see if the stalling has been resolved by then. Surely if it happens again, I'll let you know.

Don't know if it would apply with the Jeeps, but... In my racing days, a common cause of stalling(when coming to a stop) in the Grand National's was the torque converter locking and failing to unlock. In the GN's it was discovered by doing a test drive with a Modis or some other good scanner connected. It would show the status of the TC solenoid and whether it was locked or unlocked. Perhaps the dealer can hook up the Star Scan or whatever they use and do a diagnostic run.. Hope it helps..

Folks, if you go forward to 2020 you will see posts saying that the problem does indeed come down to problems with the torque converter not releasing. An amazing prediction, in effect 9 years before resolved it seems.

Lucky me ... my 2007 4.7 with 49k miles stalled on the highway. After doing some research online learned of a recall, which my car doesn't fall under. Chrysler advises me to bring the car into the dealer for a diagnostic test $105 to see whats wrong.

Receive a phone call from my local dealer, good news. Nothing is wrong with your car. My response is thats actually bad news as there is something wrong with the car as it shouldn't be stalling on the highway. Dealers suggests changing plugs and belts - almost laughable.

Chrysler financial opened a case ,,, oh boy. Anyone want to buy a Commander LOL.

2007 Hemi Engine Stalls

Engine began stalling about 4 months ago after installing platinum plugs. Found that was a no no. Put OEM plugs in. Stalling continues sporadically. Will be driving at 70 and engine just quits. Turn off ignition, something appears to reset and the engine starts and runs fine. Sometimes will stall for a few seconds and re-catch. Sometimes, quits at stop light/sign and I have to turn key off and will restart. Occasionally the accelerated will just increase RPM from idle to 1500 while stopped. CEL never comes on in any situation. I am seeing there doesn't appear to be a solution after all the posts I am reading.

I have the exact same problem.

2007 Commander with Hemi
Babied, always maintained correctly. Everything has been by the book. I have done all the oil changes, it has never seen anything but 5w-20 full synthetic.

-Started stalling randomly at stop lights. Maybe once a week.
-Changed plugs, which were OEM, to new OEM plugs. Stalling seemed to get better
-6 months later stalling is back. It stalled on the Interstate on my wife and she nearly crashed.
-Has stalled out at stop lights like 20 times overall. Am friends with Jeep dealer mechanic. He wants me to change plugs (again) because apparently there are two different OEM plugs of the same part number. One has a black top, the other has a silver top. I am not sure which ones I have but will update when I pull one this weeked. I believe (there is a technical service bulletin) that the black tops are the correct OEM plugs.......

If anyone gets a definitive solution to this I would be greatly appreciative. I am out of warranty and cannot afford to get swindled at the dealership.

Jeep installing

I seen that many are having or have had issues with stalling out. Has anyone found a true fix?
Dealer mechanics are telling me that they need to drive it all day to give me an answer.....not interested in replacing a lot of "maybe" parts.

2007 HEMI 5.7
Stalls when coming to a stop and at 65mph.

Any thoughts?
I've seen the recalls for 06.

FYI Mine stalls randomly too. Most often when cold and when stopped in drive or coming to a stop. Changed the ignition switch to fix another issue, I think is stalls less now but not yet fixed. Suspect it's the transmission/computer for it. I have two new filters and am going to change the fluid see if it makes a difference.

Check your lower ckp ( crank position sensor ) hard starting, stalling randomly can be cause from improper circuit at monitoring ignition point cylinder 1 . Should be easy to locate remove and replace your stalling issues should be fixed. Has to do something with sending fuel timing ect. Based on the location of the part it's really subject to rain salt snow mid whatever terrain your driving.Do little bit of research on that. Should be a minor fox seeing these modules last about 50k roughly. A sotimes It may or may not give a code or light. Often without warning. Have you yet used any diagnostic ?

I have this problem to. 07 hemi, when coming to a stop, i will be waiting at a red light then the engine stalls, also will stall when driving at low speeds like in a parking lot and also sometimes when I'm reversing. as you can tell I'm a daily staller. at least once a day if not more. It throws a p0884 code. can't seem to find much info on it? any help is appreciated.

Not a jeep but the same issue

I had a 2004 Durango with a 5.7 hemi for 7 years and it was a great truck until the last two winters I had it. Once it started getting cold outside it would randomly shut off. It would start back up but not safe. I replaced alot of sensors, fuel/air filter, plugs, a few trips to the dealer, and never found a real fix or explanation. The thing that was weird was it was great in the summer and pulled are camper like a boss. I finally traded it in and got my wife a newer Aspen. That seemed to fix the issue.:)
