Finally was able to plasti-dip my wheels and grill. I love the idea of this stuff I mean come on its removable paint! It's super durable, really forgiving, and easy to use. Comes in tons of colors even metallics and clear. I did mine matte black. The wheels took 2 cans, 2 coats, and about 2 hours. Home depot sells the spray cans for roughly 6-8 bucks a can. Since I've done mine I've gotten requests to do an entire ford escape flat black and my wife and her friends wheels. I highly recommend this product and am in no way associated with the product plasti-dip. Im going to get a few cans of clear before I go off road again and then peel it off when I'm done to avoid scratches. Feedback is welcomed.
Great, Thanks for letting me know that. When I saw the baking part that kind of scared me to do it but since there is no baking involved I think I will.
Baking the headlights is pretty fail safe because the oven only gets to about 215 degrees. The hardest part about headlight retros is making sure to seal the light back up.
I've done a few sets, with pretty good luck every time. There should be enough glue left on the lights after the first time they are apart to reseal the light. Just make sure you get it hot again and press the two halves together tightly.
3M butyl tape works magic if you have fogging issues.
I've had the headlights on my Mazda apart at least 3 times doing various painting and projector swaps and this last time around I used the butyl tape and then Plastidipped over the for a clean looking seal. Sounds silly, but they look the part.
I did my chrome grill....took me 2 tries to get it right. First time there was lots of drips.
I like how it came out. I've been through a brush carwash about 10 times since then and no peeling....
my 06 commander with black plasti-dipped wheels. just did it today. came out ok. I think im gonna do the front grill next. maybe this friday if I have time.
That just convinced me to paint my factory wheels rather than buying aftermarket, that looks really nice. Quick question for you, are you running wheel spacers at all?
If you were talking to me, I. Am running 1.25" wheel spacers and 265/70/17's I don't offroad too much and I get a very slight rub at full lock. So if you are gonna offroad I would advise doing the pinch weld mod. If not, screw it. I hope this helps.
Brand new here! Had to make this my first post after dippin' my grill, rims and runnerboards. This stuff is amazing! I can definitely see myself going crazy with this stuff. I'm seriously contemplating spraying the dash matte black now!
I'm going to do the rest of the exterior plastic once the morning dew evaporates. South Carolina is pretty dang humid!
I did the back bumper's plastic and the back plastic and emblem above the license plate yesterday. Looks pretty dang good! The red/black look plays well together.
A tip for others. Stop thinking of this like it is paint. By all means put something to block it from whatever it is you don't want sprayed (I used index cards), but if what you use is going to be right up against what you are spraying, like my index cards were tightly wedged under the edges of the plastic, then it may be worth it to just spray everything, get a little bit on the paint, then use a toothpick or other firm yet ductile object to pick off the excess.
Dude this is so sick! I'll have my first mod if I do this. So if I want to keep the middle piece and the lug nuts chrome, what do I do?
I was thinking I'd do newspaper around those areas, but I don't know how I'd get it like yours. I feel that I'd do a sloppy job if I'm trying to achieve precision with a sprayer.
No need to tape the tires, overspray peels rite off without affecting the wheels. In case of really light overspray use some duct tape to peel it.
