you sure it's oil? The leak can start at one spot but show it's self in another. You need to get in there and really track it down. How bad is the leak? does it puddle under the Jeep?
A rear main seal leak usually collects and drips from the Bell Housing of the Transmission.
The new kind of rear main seals they've been using in every engine designed since the 90's, last much longer and leak far less than the common rear main seal leak of years ago.
Like with any leak, clean the engine and compartment real well and keep going back looking for the leak where it starts. Leaks can be decieving because the fluid will always down, collect and drip from the lowest point. So where you see oil collected is NOT always the location of the leak, its just where the fluid is collecting as it runs down the engine.
nearly 78K miles on our HEMI, no oil leaks thus far; though, transmission oil pan gasket and casing leaked under 'extended warranty' coverage (approx 62K). It's been pretty flawless other than that.
Well I don't have the hemi, but the jeep has now given me another surprise. I am leaking oil between where the engine and trasmission bolt together. Based on the general location, i'm thinking it's a rear main seal. I'm not really happy about it, only have 81,000 on the jeep. Anyone have an idea on what is the cost of fixing something like this? I'm assuming the transmission would have to be removed in order to replace it. And what about the bars stop leak for rear main seal?
I had a leak on our 5.7 Litre Hemi 2WD. I though rear main seal and told the dealer service guy that. It has lifetime warranty (service agreement) done 130K miles leak was pretty small. Dealer diagnosed it as a gasket leak and after 2 separate 1 week stays was "fixed". So now it leaks worse than ever. So either they botched the pan gasket replacement or mis-diagnosed it and the seal is leaking worse. Anyone had rear crankshaft seal leaks? Do they develop fast at some point?
