Active or passive crossovers on the Boston System

Meat,

Are the crossovers in the Boston system active or passive for the front outputs?

I want to change out the dash speakers, but I noticed the stocks have a DCR of about 2ohms. I don't want to change the x-over frequency too much going with a 4ohm speaker if they're passive.

Thanks in advance for helping out an old school installer that's out of the loop!

For what it's worth,
I stopped at my dealer today and looked, the door speakers are 4ohm.
That is the standard issue speakers. He pulled the speakers out of the box. I don't know for certain about the dash speakers. I will find out this weekend.

BlackonBlack, you know thats a good question, I never really looked into that a whole lot. I was so quick to rip out anything that made noise out of my Jeep that I never really checked, I would guesse passive, using simple chokes and caps. but the BA stereo does allmost have an effect that it allmost might have some slight time alignment into it, which would lend me to beleive that it might be active.

Let me see what I can find out, if it is active, id have to say its the lowest price vehicle ive ever seen whith an active x-over and TA done to it, thats usually only in very high end jags, mercedes and so forth from the factory.

But the 3" dash is 2ohm huh? Well the amp could easily do 6 ohms if it was passive.

Ill look into this today and see what I can find,
Jeff K

I pulled my dash speakers out today. Dash speaker is 8ohm. 15W
05059062AB
EAS9PH120A
45301S

This is from the Commander Sport, no upgrade to the stereo.
Took 2 minutes or less to take the speaker out. Would have taken less, but I had to study the clip for a moment to unhook it.

4Ohm door speakers and 8Ohm dash speakers.

I did have an Idea BlackonBlack, Infinity Reference line makes a 2-way 3.5" driver that would fit well in the dash, and guesse what, its 2ohms! These things rock, we did an all jbl/infinity truck this year running these in the dash ... not only did it sound great but it won world finals! Match that with a killer high QTS 6.5 or 6" in the door and you would have a killer upgrade that would be comparably low dough.

I'm thinking they're an active x-over, but honestly I don't want to pull the amp apart to find out. I found some 3 ohm SoundStream coax's with outboard crossovers I think I'm going to try.

I ran a shop for many a years (retail and sound-Q competition) till a table saw bit me and I decided to get an electrical engineering degree, so I'm by no means a novice.

My last daily driver was a Buick Rendezvous with all SoundStream amps, Dynaudio mids and highs and a DD 9500 15" in the back. I really wish I could fit the 15, but I bought the Commander for it's seating capacity so it's down to a single 10" with a small class D amp and using as much of the OEM as possible just to conserve space.

I think I'll stick with the BA amp and replace the 3.5's in the dash, keep the doors as is unless I get froggy and toss a pair of TB 6x9 subs in the doors.

If you happen to see a pin-out on the BA amp, see if there's separate dash and door outputs for me.

When the snow subsides and I can clear some room in my garage, I'll rip into it myself and maybe answer the questions on my own.

Thanks for the input Meat!

Ill look for a pinout, I think I may have it somewhere....somewhere on some pc. Good to see another SQ freak out there, were getting to be a rare breed it seems!

The TB 6x9 sub absoloutly rocks for the price, the more TB stuff I test the more I like it, Ive been running their 3" magneisium full-ranges for a midrange in aimable pods on the dash for about 1 season and they rock!

Speaking of TB speakers, have you tried any of thier high excursion 8's? I was thinking of a pair of the 8's in a vented enclosure behind the passenger side rear seat. Looks like I can squeeze .75 ft^3 using 1/2 birch ply and glas. It's that or a SoundStream 10 (old sponserships die hard!)
