Lack of Nav Knowhow????

I just got the Navigation installed a couple of days ago and was wondering a couple of things and hoped someone might know the answer. I have read the book.... although nobody has ever accused me of being a bookworm.... I learn better by fiddling but this seems to be one of those cases where I was stumped and read the book and am still stumped.
When travelling my GPS never shows me an estimated time of travel. That field is always blank..... any thoughts there?
Isn't there anyway to see the speed you are travelling? Even the simple hand held models show speed.

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

It sounds like something isn't wired up to the vehicles speed sensor.

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

You should be able to go into the settings option and turn that feature on - although it should be defaulted to display the estimated number of time to destination. You can change this to estimated time of arrival in the settings also. The one thing I have noticed - if "your destination is located in an area where turn by turn guidance is not provided" (get that a lot!) - it will only show the estimated distance and the time has dashes displayed.

Here is what I do to compensate for that short comming when taking a road trip - use the itiniary feature - set the first destination to the city center of your destination - set the second destination to your final destination.

Hope this helps - If you need specific instructions - let me know and I will post them (after writing them down while at the nav unit)

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

I have only tried putting in a destination by address and it always tells me turn by turn guidance is not available. I get the dashes for estimated time.... exactly the way it shows in the book. I will try the itinerary or get a different destination... I think it is because my home falls into that category which is hard to believe as it's a 40 year old nieghborhood. What about the speed not showing anywhere... I don't see that in the book either but I would surely think they would have it???

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

My home was built in 1943 and the subdivision is on the national historic registery - I get the turn by turn guidance not provided - I just have my home address set to the country club I belong to which is just about 5 minutes from my sub.

Try guidance to a your city center and see what you get.

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

Mine does not have the time listed when I go to a military base plus my house is not correct on the GPS. Oh well.

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

I have taken several road trips since I picked up my Commander - mostly within 3 - 4 hours for which I have used the nav system - seems to be pretty accurate. Even getting to my home - although I get the "destination is located ... turn by turn guidance not provided" I still gets me to my front door

Yesterday I went shopping in Atl and needed to get to a stort that I only knew the cross streets - I used the "Intersection" feature - and it got me right to it. I am sure the next DVD I get (as soon as the next revision is released) will have even more accurate information.

Overall I am pleased with the nav system - afterall it seems to be pretty up to date for the N. GA and Atlanta area - where they seem to move freeway exits, businesses and roads overnight

Some GPS companies do not show military bases, for security purposes.

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

I will try the different home address and see if that helps to give me estimated time instead of dashes as well as the itinerary feature. My other question does not seem to be getting anyones attention so I am guessing this is not a feature of the GPS in our JC's. Do these Nav units not show you current speed?

Re: Lack of Nav Knowhow????

I don't have a JC GPS, but I've had many different ones from $90 hand helds to $1000 + GPS and all of them showed the speed as long as they had locks on the sats.
