I get Sirrus Satellite, but Never signed up?

I just purchased a used 2010 Commander, it had been a rental car before I purchased it. And I have found that often rental cars with Sat Radio, has the Sat Radio working, i.e. must have a subscription.

Well, just for giggles, I tried the Sat Radio mode in my Commander's RES radio. It works, although since I never signed up for it, or got a subscription, I was surprised.

Do new Jeeps come with a free introductory year of Sat Radio? Could this be a subscription from Rental Car Company, they forgot to purge out of the Radio when they sold it?

What if my battery goes dead -OR- I disconnect the battery, and the memory dumps out of the Radio? Do I loose the Satellite Subscription? Is there a way to check if there is a code, that I have to enter into the radio, that I can record and re-enter later to keep the Sat Radio coming?

I am not sure if it is still offered but they were giving 1 year free introductory Sirius service with the purchase of new select vehicles. Since each SAT receiver is electronically registered with the vendor maybe you're getting what is remaining of the free trial or existing account. I pay the annual fee to Sirius, if I sold my vehicle I would have to keep my SAT receiver or contact them to change my account to reflect the new SID/ESN number of the new receiver/radio.

I believe it depends on the dealer as well. The dealer where I purchased mine offered 3 months of free satellite radio.

There is no registration code on the radio besides the radio ID which can be found in the setup menu when you're in satellite mode.

Just don't question it any further and see how long it lasts lol.

I have disconnected my battery several times while doing some mods/upgrades. Never had to do anything special after powering back up except reprogram my radio memory presets, but then, my head unit is an after market/non-eom system that is SAT ready.

There is a barcoded label with the radio ID on mine that I had to type in when activating the radio on the web site- after reading the previous post by LuvMyCommander I discovered that I could have got it through the radio after powering it on too.

Thats my plan. My used 2010 was a Rental Vehicle, and we already have a lot of evidence the Rental Company it came from (don't know the name, I went through a Jeep Dealer) was NOT particularly squared away. They lost the 2nd Fobik Key, so it only has one and the Spare Tire was missing and appears the cable holding it was cut, which likely happened in the Rental Lot and the company never noticed the Spare was stolen.

So, its NOT unlikely that they probably failed to cancel the Sirrus Subscription for the Radio in my Commander when they sold it and didn't notice that either. I guess there is a silver lining in the cloud that came from the disorganized rental office my Commander came from.

I'll be listening to Sat Radio and NOT feel the least bit guilty, until I get my missing spare tire fixed and 2nd Fobik Key programmed.

It might also be a deal, that you get the remaining month of service after cancelling, and a month from now, my Sat Radio will go dead.

That's very true, especially since they run a money losing business!

My wife had a 3 month trial that came with our Honda mini van.
They turned that thing of as soon as 90 days were up, not a minute later.
Just use it as much as you can and enjoy. :-)

Yea, looking at the litterature, it appears the 2010 were coming with a free year of Sat Radio. I wonder when it activates, at manufacture or at the sale? I have a card in my users guide packet, that looks like it came from the manufacturer, NOT the dealer, it has the date Oct 13, 2009, it appears to put in the car at the factory and computer print out of the date it was put in the car, it might be the ship date or manufacture date.

So will see if my Sat Radio turns off in 2 days, or it I get another month or two of Sat Radio.

BTW, my guess how it works, like Satellite TV, the recieving equipment (the Radio in this case) has an ID number. The Satellite Company keeps an electronic list of the ID nubmers and whether they are granted access or NOT. The satellite sends a signal to the receiving equipment to allow it to decode the satellite signal based on if it is on the list or NOT. The Satellite company just takes the radio off the list and if you try to tune into satellite radio, the radio won't do it, or at least won't decode it, until the system tells it has been granted access.
