Upgrading Audio Sytem

Does anyone know the specs on the base factory audio system. I am wanting to change out my head unit for a dvd/Nav aftermarket one. However they all only seems to come with 4 x 50watts. I Was wondering how the factory speakers are powered. I am guessing that the the subs in the front doors may be powered by a different amp. Anyone know?

Re: Upgrading Audio Sytem

I to am upgrading, although I am keeping the Nav/CD system and am just upgrading to a 12 inch sub and have 2 amps, one for the sub and the other for the rest of the speakers

Anyone know if it has a stock amp and/or where it is located????

And are there really stock subs somewhere???... where?

Re: Upgrading Audio Sytem

Depends on what audio you got with the Jeep.
I bought mines with the 273W Boston Acoustics system.
6 speakers total: 2 dash-mounted highs, 2 front-door mids/midbass, 2 rear-door mids/midbass.

There are no true subwoofers in the Commander. That is my next addition. I'm just wondering where to put it. I already did the headunit swap (Alpine D310 DVD/MP3 w/ screen) and headrest LCD's. Didn't opt for the overhead screen. Too much blocking the rear view as it is... worse with the 3rd row up.

I'm thinking of a in-panel sealed sub enclosure on the left side rear next to the 3rd row. Can't put anything on the right side due to the HVAC controls.
And I do not want to lose ANY cargo space... so I'm not even considering a speaker box thrown in the cargo area.

FYI, the amp for the Boston Acoustic OEM system is in the left side rear panel.

Re: Upgrading Audio Sytem

If you have the standard factory stereo, you have 6x9 speakers in the front door, 3 1/2 in the dash, and 6 1/2 - 6 3/4 in the back door. No amps or subs. I changed out my stuff as well as the factory stuff was crap. Your best bet is to go to crutchfields.com and it will walk you through exactly what will fit your Commander. They also send you free wiring harnesses which is nice so you don't have to cut and splice. All the speakers are really easy to remove as is the radio. FYI...the dash speaker grills just pop right out.

Re: Upgrading Audio Sytem

On a side note, you might need to get a special harness to avoid losing any functionality. More manufacturers are running stuff through the factory head unit (door chimes for lights left on, or keys in the ignition). I had to get a special harness for my head unit. The only thing I can think of that it was for was the park assist. Whenever backing up, the old unit would mute whenever I was close to something....so I'm assuming you would lose that without the proper harness. I couldn't figure out anything else that would be lost without it.

I don't think so....at least not without some modificaitons. It's been a while since I did the install, but if I recall correctly, the speakers fit down in the circular opening and the ones I put in were a pretty tight fit. You would likely have to do some cutting to make a 4.5 fit.

Re: Upgrading Audio Sytem

I have the BA sound system installed. I want to replace all the speakers in the doors and a rep @ Crutchfield suggested that a 6x9 will fit in the front doors. I know that the standard OEM system in the commanders, without the Boston Accoustics upgrade, use 6x9 in the doors. However, with the BA upgrade, it looks like there is an 8 inch woofer in the door. The rep did claim that I can still fit a 6x9 in there.

How can a 6x9 speaker fit into an 8 inch hole?

Has anyone actually pulled out the speakers in the front doors to confirm the actual size and what will fit?

I could easily take the panels off myself but I really don't want to do that until I'm ready to perform the actual installation.
