Nav Conversion and Audio Upgrade

I finally have everything installed in my Commander. After a lot of researching I have finnaly got my set up (and it sounds amazing)
- Eclipse AVN5510 Touch Screen Nav/DVD ($$$$$)
- Metra XSVI6502 wiring harness
- Metra double din dash kit
- Parrot Eclipse Blue Tooth hands free ($125)
- Eclipse iPod adapter
- Viper 790 XVR 2 way alarm/remote start with additional sensors
- Eclipse 3 1/2 Dash Speakers
- Polk Momo 6x9 Comp Speakers (custom fit for window issues)
- Polk Momo 6.5" Rear Door Speakers
- Alpine 4 Channel 300 watt rms Amp (for door speakers, head unit runs 3.5)
- Polk Momo 875 RMS Mono block amp
- Polk Momo 12" Subs
- Tsunami 3 farad capacitor, nickel plated RCA's, gold connectors, 4 gauge tsunami wires and distribution center:
I saved $1200 in installation by doing this myself, I am a certified car audio installer
I bought the REC Nav bezel from Jparts.com $75 (cheapest I could find and free shipping) and got THE REAL MOPAR REAR CHROME HANDLES for $45.

The Install:
The only trouble I ran into with the monitor is that our car has no radio illumination feature so I had to run a 12 volt switch to the illum on the nav so I could get those features at night) The XSVI6502 harness was sweet because it loops an accesory wire from the constant, and allows the radio to stay on until the door opens

I havent installed the subs yet, contemplating ordering the kick 10" TSW subs (shallow mounts that are 400 watt rms and hit louder than most every sub) but I would have to custom build a box (yet I keep the rear seats)

Re: Nav Conversion and Audio Upgrade

LuckyAx2,

I have been researching the Eclipse Nav units and I was leaning toward the AVN6610. Is there any reason you went with the 5510? Correct me if I'm wrong but the 5510 can only do either navi or dvd at once, but not both and the 6610 can do both navi and dvd at once (2 dvd slots)?

Did you retain the factory steering wheel controls?

Where do you plan on mounting the amps/cap and subs?

Are you going to attempt to sell the old radio?

I have been planning out a system and it looks like you bought almost every item on my list... ENJOY!

Re: Nav Conversion and Audio Upgrade

I chose the 5510 purely to save money. I dont plan on using the features the 6610 comes with. You are dead on with the difference, the 6610 has a DVD and a NAV DVD drive while the 5510 has a CD and a Nav/DVD drive. The 6610 also has dual zone so if you plan to add headrest monitors or a drop down you can have nav playing on the unit and a DVD for the rear.

For me, I only care about my unit and if I was gonna spend the extra money, I might as well upgrade to the ones with the HDDNav. (working at Circuit City did hook me up with a nice discount direct from eclipse)

But I am a recent college grad, no kids, and I dont give a damn about people in the back so for me the 5510 was my best bet.

The four channel I plan to mount in the left rear quarter panel (there is enough room for it, barely) and the mono block will be placed on the custom box I am building.

- I never had steering wheel controls, and I am not selling the old radio, this double din is way too nice to part with...

Now the photos:
Here is almost everything in boxes

Re: Nav Conversion and Audio Upgrade

The little knob is my handfree blue tooth

and I know this is hard to see but this is what the nav looks like when the illumination switch is on, it reverses the white background to black, its way better for at night (you can get pulled over if your screen is too bright at night)

Nice, I never thought of installing the iPod over on that side. I might make that move because the glove box is too far away.

One thing I was disappointed with was the stock Nav isn't touch screen and the knob is on the passenger side. I saw that the '08's will have touch screen. Do you think it would be better to buy an aftermarket Nav or get an '08 Nav system to put in my '07?

Touch screen is a blessing and a curse. Just wait until your passengers all stick their greasy fingers all over it... gonna be a pain to keep clean. Albeit it can be a bit easier to use. I am not overly concerned that the 2007 didn't have a touch screen.
