Adding a camera to factory Nav.

Anyone know if it's possible to add an aftermarket rear view camera to the factory Nav unit? I know you cant make the factory one work, but is it possible with some other camera?
I've seen some references to a "CAN-BUS" adapter, but I don't know what that is. Only seen them for other brands of vehicles though, not for Jeep Commanders.
Any tips? Thanks, -SF

This has been discussed here several times and I think it was pretty much decided that it could not be done. Sorry.

Search the site/threads seems to me that it can be done if you order the correct parts and then if I understood the dealer correctly, this fall Jeep is supposed to be adding a program to starscan to make it all work with the can-bus. As long as you have the later 2006 model nav unit with the small 3 pin connector in the back. If you do not then you would have to change out your nav unit. I am waiting for the starscan update.

Who makes the factory navigation system? Are you sure that you can't just buy a rear camera from the OEM and make it plug and play?

In my 4Runner, the OEM navigation is made by Eclipse for Toyota. I purchased an Eclipse rear camera for $150 and it plugged right into the back of the factory navigation without any other wiring. Are you sure you can't do the same thing with your factory unit?

Hi, I was in the same boat over here in the UK, and I didn't want another screen in the car when I already had the factory sat nav, so found this company....
www.avelectronic.com, the interesting bit here is they sell a unit that can convert your existing sat nav screen to become a rear view camera even if this was not an option at the factory.
Just received my unit from them here in the UK, now the 'worrying' bit is it needs a bit of soldering on the main unit for the jeep/Chrysler units to work. They have sent through detailed instructions...leaving it to an exp car audio specialist to install and adapt, bit nervous but will let you know how it goes. The guys at the web site seem quite helpful. good luck.

ok, the above was my response at the beginning of the year. The 2006 factory sat nav can be converted to show a rear view camera, mine works great, very happy. As mentioned you need to get the kit from avelectronic to adapt it.

Side Rails, Sports bars, Chrome Petrol cap
Rear View Camera added
DVD, SAT NAV, Light greystone leather.

I am interested in this conversion. What was the total cost? If you don't mind.

To be honest cant remember, think it was about $399 for the basic head unit then had to get the camera as well, its all listed on their web site. As I paid in £'s for the labour difficult to tell you the total amount for the job.

I'm interested to know if it is possible for the factory fit rear dvd to feed pictures to the front sat nav screen through this box?

My 1st Mod

After reading tons of posts here I think the lockpick should be my first mod.

I have the Rec Nav with 6 disk changer, no rear cam or dvd. Here is what I'm hoping to get info on.

a) Purchase and install a good rear camera. Any suggestions about infrared, nightvison, and where best to install would be appreciated. I've seen them on the plate and rear handles. Is it best to get one from ebay? Is this a difficult install?

Cheers,
Norm

New to me. 2006 Limited Hemi, Rec Nav and needs a few more toys! This is gonna be fun.

I have a question for anyone that has changed out the factory rear view camera for a different camera. I would like to mount a camera above the rear hatch. I know that there is an easy way to run the cable thru the same grommet as the rear brake light wires. The real question is can I just substitute the new camera for the old one by connecting the new camera cable to the old existing cable? Has anyone tried this? I do not have a clear view with the existing camera because of the rear tire carrier and the NATO gas can.

Maybe the two will meet up soon edit: they did , I now have 2,now gave 1 away...and got it back again.
