Alternator

I just wanted to write this up to help anyone that encounters the same symptoms.

I started my Jeep yesterday evening to come home from my kids fair and I noticed that there was now a loud, rpm dependent, whine from my alternator. Since I had about 15 miles to go, I basically just drove the quickest, most direct route home. All the way home, my Jeep drove like normal, with the exception of the alternator whine.

When I pulled into my neighborhood, suddenly the ABS and Traction Control lights came on and this constant high-pitched beep started. I also noticed my acceleration felt like the transmission was slipping and the engine was surging. I had to put my transmission in Park before putting it into reverse to back into my garage. Even after I turned off my Jeep, the high-pitched beep did not stop. I had to remove the negative battery cable to get it to stop.

This morning, I removed the positive battery cable and the alternator. I took my alternator to O'Reilly and obtained a new one. When I got it home and put in on the Jeep, upon startup, it started making a chattering noise that sounded like the bearing were bad. So, I had to take it back to another O'Reilly to get a second alternator from them. This one actually worked.

Hmmmm, you didn't get the electric fault warning light? The little battery symbol warning light?

It comes on if volts are too high or too low or the PCM recognizes a field control fault with the alternator.

If the alternator stopped making current all together, the battery would take over until it drained enough to drop its voltage to the point it would light the light. BUT, there would "likely" had been a field fault that was easily recognized.

Perhaps the alternator kept making current, just very messy and inconsistent current/voltage that wouldn't power everything correctly.

Your other symptoms sound like the Drive-by-Wire and ESP malfunctioning, likely from what ever electrical power disruption the alternator was causing.

You should have gotten a Drive-by-Wire warning lamp and chime, its the symbol with a picture of a throttle with a lightning bolt above it, the picture of the throttle looks like two curves bowed inward with a inclined line between them.

The high-pitched beep is really puzzling? Was it a warning system or was it the sound of something electrical reacting or activating? Semi-Conductors and Micro-Chips react very erratically to wrong electrical supply, so basically its NOT shocking in modern cars with these controlling so much, if you have an electrical supply problem, lots of things go haywire and react erratically.

Yes, I did get the battery symbol light, I forgot to mention that.

I don't remember the drive by wire light, but I do remember that the little yellow A/C indicator light was flashing intermittently even thought it was not one.

The high-pitched beep was very disconcerting, but haywire and erratic are perfect descriptors of what was happening.

Also, something I forgot to include was that my battery was actually okay after this, because the electronics gave out with the battery still over 50% charged - did not completely drain. I was able to charge the battery while working on the alternator and it survived.
