Chrysler Resale Values Drop 6% In One Week After Bankruptcy Filing

According to Automotive Leasing Guide, the resale value of a Chrysler vehicle dropped six percent in the week following the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

In just seven days the uncertainty about Chrysler's future crept into the marketplace in a very real way, damaging the resale values for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep products almost equally.

Prior to the bankruptcy filing a three-year old Chrysler was worth 34.8 percent of its original value. After the filing, that amount dropped to just 28.8 percent.

The value of a three-year old Dodge went from 37.3 percent to 31.2 percent and three-year old Jeep vehicles declined in value from 38.4 percent of the original purchase price to 32.4 percent.

The news isn't good for those who recently purchased a Chrysler vehicle and as the declines are based on percentage they can take a significant toll on pricey models like SUVs or the Challenger SRT8 pictured above.

In comparison, a three-year old Toyota retains 45.5 percent of its original value.

Just did a Kelly Blue Book / Retail Value check on my loaded 2006 Limited and found it to be valued at $27,715 in Excellent condition. I can live with that for a 3 year old vehicle that I paid $30,000 for.

Last time I checked the Blue Book on my commander the trade in value was approx. $14,000. Kind of makes you wonder why the sticker price was $33,000? Especially since the vehicle is only a year and a half old.

On Monday, I received a buy - back post card from my dealer. Due to decreased production, my Commander was suddenly worth more. The dealer would give me more than the book value plus give me "up" to $10,000 off a new vehicle. Being the fisherman that I am, I took the bait. I figured that if I could get a new Commander and keep my same payment, why not. Well, it seems the incentives on the Commander are only $2500 and my payment would go up $2 - 300.00 / month. So, no deal. I told them to call me if anything came up. My dealer is NOT on the hit list!

Actually to be precise about the figures, the drop e.g. for Chrysler was not 6%, but instead 17%. If the resale value goes from 34.8% down to 28.8%, it's a drop of 6% units, but compared to the previous price almost one fifth less.

However I don't see that, at least not in Switzerland, and for sure not for Jeeps. The cheapest cars you can get are normally GM models. :-)

When going gets tough - the Commander gets going.

I actually just received a letter in the mail for my local dealership asking to buy my 07 comm. Stating that used Jeep Commanders are in very high demand and they are low in stock with them. They then went on to state that they would buy it for considerably more then what the Kelly Blue Book value is. Sounds good to me, but I would never give up my comm.

I think white comm is right, the value is relative to the demand. Most of my local dealers have no XK's on the lot but they do have tons of wranglers. I would bet that wrangler owners are seeing the price drop on trade in specifically because they have so many on the lot and the supply will be much greater with the closing of so many dealerships.

I have had dealers do this before too. Commanders are NOT in demand. It is just a way for the dealer to get you to come to the delership and try to sell you a vehicle.

My sister and brother in law were looking for one recently and the dealer they went to said that they cannot keep used commanders on the lot. Once they come in they go right back out again. The have new XK's on the lot and they cannot get rid of them.
