I was over at the Gibson main office and plant here in Corona and I asked then if they had headers for a Commander Hemi. They do not but said if I left my Commander with them for about two weeks that they could create the prototype for Commander Hemi Headers. Is there any interest in getting headers by anyone on here. I never really followed the subject when I had the 4.7 engine.
I have had Gibson headers on a few motor homes in the past.
First thing I would want to know is a approx. gain in MPG and power. I'm sure they have a computer program for this. Then there is the matter of cost. I'm sure there will be gains in both areas but are they worth the cost? Bet it would sound great with them on!
The gain in MPG will be nominal. At an increase of 0.5 MPG it will take the lifetime of the Jeep plus a few more years to hit the break even point in cost.
Additionally, headers are just 1 part in the equation to better fuel economy and power. You have to make gains on both the intake and the exhaust side of the engine to see real increases and even at that the cost will far outweigh the gains.
As far as market for headers, yes the market would be there but it will be a small niche. The vehicle is discontinued and despite being a capable off road vehicle, lets face it, most of them are soccer mom mall crawlers.
Yes the MPG gain will be nominal, however the HP and TQ gain would be worth it. If your worried about MPG then your definately driving the wrong vehicle and should be driving a smart car or prius.
You are correct about the headers being only one part of the equation. But im almost positive anyone thinking about going with headers or anyone that would actualy purchase them if they were made for the XK is probablly looking for more power out of their engine. With that being said they most likey already have some sort of cold air intake, ported throtle body, cat back exhaust and some sort of tuner programed. Every mod helps!
I have had headers on cars in the past, not a Commander. I can tell you THERE IS a hp gain and very noticeable torque gain on the vehilcle. Longer tubes are better than short tubes, but they have to make fitment for the vehicle which may mean "short tubes." You may want to research this.
would love headers. im actually thinking of buying hemi ram headers and having the shop make them work. or buy stock srt8 manifolds
