Trans filters

hi. watched the video's on changing the trans filter(s), and saw that there was 2 filters for the auto trans. one pan, and one spin on.

what is the purpose of each filter? i know what the pan could be for, but what about the spin on?

I'm sorry to say I've never looked into it.
I was impressed they chose to use a primary and secondary filter.
So, that being said, I do have a WAG.
Most likely, fluid returning from the torque converter is being run through the spin on, and ultimatly dumped into the pan.
Lockup torque converters can throw some fine grindings into the pan.....this would prevent that.
The pan (flat) filter then only has to contend with sheared clutch debris.
I suspect the clearances are so close where the control solenoids are in the valve body, there would be no tolerance for metal particles.

Typical MB hyper engineering......not a bad thing.

Bear in mind.....that is indeed a WAG,
