Angry 5.7L Oil Consumption getting worse

At 166,000 miles, it is now using more than 1 qt per 1000 miles. Used to go 6000 without using any. Changed every 6000 with M1 5w20 and K&N filter. The oil use seems to have started at about 130,000, and is steadily getting worse. Jeep claims PCV valve has been replaced every 30,000 as part of regular maintenance. Any ideas?

The Hemi engine is designed with tight clearance low tension piston rings to reduce friction and help with fuel economy. One problem with this design is that the piston rings on high mileage engines can become stuck in the rings lands of the piston and allow blow by and increase oil consumption. M1 is pretty clean oil with a good detergent package but fuel deposits can cause ring sticking as well. I would recommend using a product called Archoil 9100 that is known to really clean out engine deposits in the ring area. This is pretty amazing stuff and it is just remarkable how well is will clean your engine and will not loosen deposits and plug up anything. It literally emulsifies deposits in a safe manner. This may help free up the rings and reduce oil consumption.

What do you mean by "Jeep"? A dealer claims there are records in a "Jeep" database documenting the PCV valve changes every 30k miles on your vehicle?

Are you saying the OEM maintenance schedule states to replace the PCV every 30k miles, and you've never done it?


"Jeep" the brand, at Corporate HQ doesn't perform maintenance on individual vehicles, Dealers and independent shops do that. I imagine the centralized service records that Dealers access are done at the Corporate HQ.


A malfunctioning PCV can cause excessive oil consumption.


Someone correct me if I'm wrong, since I don't have a HEMI, but isn't the PCV different then most vehicles? Its NOT an inexpensive replaceable PCV, its a big PCV that is designed to be dissembled and cleaned. If you fail to disassemble and clean it, oil consumption can go up? I think it sorta acts as a catch can for oil as well.


Personally I would NOT trust a Dealer, if they told me they have records saying the previous owners have brought in the vehicle and had the PCV valve replaced every 30k miles. The symptoms are such, that you should suspect the PCV as a possible cause and check it out.
