Bosch FR8TE2 and FR8TI332 vs The Rest

So, I thought I'd change all 16 of the spark plugs on my '08 Commander with the 4.7 FFV in the course of baselining the rig.

The owner's manual calls for Bosch FR8TE2 and FR8TI332. Honestly, for as rarely as a person changes spark plugs, I'm not really excited about the cost (roughly $110 for all). That said, none are locally available. I may just order these online, but I wanted to pick your collective brains for a second.

Have you folks had any experience with the cross-referenced spark plugs, Champion 446 Copper Plus and Champion 9055 Iridium plugs as a substitute? The prices aren't drastically different (about $81 for all), but there's also Autolite 6003 Copper and Autolite XP6003 Iridium plugs, also available, cheaper still. Are either of these sets worth considering? I mean, outside of heat range and quality, a spark plugs is a spark plug and new is always better than used, I imagine. Not trying to overthink it, but curious what your experience and opinions are.

I decided to do the smart thing and order the stock plugs off of Rockauto. It ended up being only $73 with shipping. Not bad!

Lightbulb Reading Along

For those of you that are reading along and are thinking of replacing the plugs on your XK, there has been quite a bit of comparisons and results of that. Try a search and then add a comment or opinion, I'm sure that all plugs that are available will have some advantages in their minds, over the competition. What are you running now and what color are they? Go from there.

I'm assuming my 08 has OEM plugs, since the previous owners had maintained it at the dealer. That said, I hadn't found a whole lot of information about using different plugs. I'm just glad I found the stock Bosches for as cheap as I did. I assume it'll run best on those.

You definitely DO NOT want to deviate from the OEM spark plugs - Bosch FR8TE2 and FR8TI332 that the owner's manual / factory specs call for.

More often than not, when you try to go with a different brand / type of spark plug, like a high performance type of plug that you would think would be an upgrade - or a cheaper brand trying to save money, you'll wind up having problems.

You can't go cheap when maintaining Commanders - it will always wind up biting you in the long run.

I had all all 16 of mine changed out at the Chrysler/Jeep dealership at about 82,000 miles - which was actually a little ahead of schedule and I had one plug that was obviously fouled and another that was pretty badly worn - both on the exhaust side as I recall.

Agreed, I've looked into getting different from OEM for many of the vehicles I've owned and the consensus was ALWAYS stick with the factory recommend plugs. Even if you found a fantastic performance replacement you would get extremely negligible gains and less money in your pocket when all said and done. Besides many extremely high performance vehicles, and I'm talking 1000HP plus vehicles, use factory plugs. I think I've said enough.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't worth the risk. My OEM-spec plugs are coming Thursday. I'm probably early on the iridiums and late on the coppers, but what the hay, I'll just baseline the puppy. What's $80 between owner and rig?

If you want a very long life plug try the Denso 4717 ITL16TT Iridium TT Spark Plug. This is a 100K mile plug and I have been running them now in my Hemi Commander for the last 3 years. Noticeably smoother idle than the stock Champion Copper plugs and have had no issues at all. The ignition on the Commander is very sensitive to the resistance of the plugs and some replacement plugs can cause strange misfires and stalling problems. These Denso plugs work fine in the 5.7 Hemi Engine.
