Quadra Drive II Chatter Problem

So I bought an 06 Commander with 56,000 miles. Shortly after buying I notice a front end chatter which occurs when vehicle is first started and then I back out of the drive way and turn. It's the same chatter sound you get when in 4WL. Now it's getting worse. Generally when the vehicle is up to operating temperature the chatter goes away. I replaced the front diff oil with mobile one and an additive as recommended by the manual. The chatter is still there. Is it possible the cv drive axles are bad or can it be that the diff needs rebuilt? Any Ideas? Thanks.

Thanks, not sure if it applies to the 5.7L Hemi, but at least I'll have something to go on if I take it to a dealer.

Did you try sifitng in and out of 4LO a couple times (you should use 4 LO at least once every other month or so to keep everything moving smothly)

I was doing a job at an RV dealer recently and when they saw my XK ..they asked me to look at a Commander they were rebuilding ... it was making that wheel hop chatter .. the transfer case was patialy locked up somehow even in 4HI

I took it for a spin around the yard for them and shifted in and out of 4LO a couple times and it fixed it.

My previous ride was an 03 Liberty Renegade with a Trac-Loc Limited Slip rear axle. It did the same thing. I took it to the dealer, and they replaced the fluid with a special synthetic oil made for the LSD. I was supposed to change it every 15,000 miles. This fixed the problem. I do not know if our ELSD's in the QD II are the same, but they do have a clutch pak. The manual says to change the fluid every 15,000 miles (heavy use - tow, dust, etc) or 30,000 normal use. If the previous owner did not change the fluid as specified, the clutch pak may be bad.

For anyone who cares, I took my jeep to the dealer and it is a smoked clutch. Cost over $2,200 to rebuild the front diff. I'm trading it in. I haven't even put 3,000 miles on it and have spent $3,000 in maintenance and repairs. $1 a mile for maintenance...that's insane! Never again.

Did you buy it with any kind of warranty when you bought the XK or did you buy it as is? My guess is that the problem was existing prior to your purchase.

Sounds like the previous owners drove it hard and got rid of it, not normal for the Commander but without maintenance history you will never know.
