BFG AT/KO - Ply issue?

So I got my brake job done this weekend and was planning on dumping my factory forteras this coming weekend for some nice BFG all terrains - but the guy at the local parts shop tells me I am swapping from a 4 ply tire to a 10 ply tire.

I had heard of this issue before, but was told it was only the case when going from metric to standard sizing... I intend to investigate the interweb but does anyone know off hand?

Assuming the 10ply issue is correct then I have the following follow up questions:
1: what kind of gas mileage loss am I looking at?
2: in lieu of the BFG ATKO, what is the next best both in terms of upping size a bit and the aggressive tread pattern?

Couple of short responses as I head out the door.
1. A bit more research on your part....I can't verify the ply count, however, a 10 ply tire, due to the carcass stiffness would ride incredibly harsh.
Should not effect mpg though.
2.Sizing and tread: What do you want the tire to do?
For example, blocky mud/off road tire is a awful snow tire because it rides on the tread blocks and there is less rubber on the road. It is also a poor rain tire for the same reason.
Regarding sizing, we have LOTS of threads going over various combinations that work, kinda worked, and didn't work at all.
Search around, refine your questions, we will all try to assist you.

What size BFGoodrich All Terrain's do you plan on running. I ran them on a few of my other 4x4's without any problems. I have never heard of anyone having ply issues with those tires. There are a few members on the forum running them without any complaints.

Looking at General Grabber AT2's - half the price of the BFG's and my "local" guy highly recommends [I live in the sticks and so local means a person with more mudding experience/jeep experience than most anyone I can think of]. Any positive/negative feedback on these particular tires? Either 255/65R17 or 265/65R17.

I have heard nothing but good reviews the General Grabber AT2's. My brother used to run them on his plow truck. He said they were an awsome tire for the price.

I believe my Good Year Silent Armors are 10 ply and I have had no problems such as a rougher ride or a change in my gas milage. The tires are great in all conditions from mud, rain to snow.

If they are selling you a 10 ply tire, that probely maens that it is like a load range "E" which will be stiff but wear really well. I run load range "E" on my truck and they are a 10 ply, but I need a 10 ply for the 8K truck that I am driving and to hold the weigh of my trailer. Just keep the air pressure on the low end and you will be fine.
