Please advise me. 17x8, 4.5 and OME springs

Hello,

I just bought a used 2006 Commander 5.7. The previous owner installed 22" wheels and tires. Not my style, but the Jeep was a good deal.

I am buying the OME heavy duty springs, struts and shocks. I have been searching for wheels. The size I keep finding is 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing.

Even though I have read every thread I can find here, I am still a bit unsure about what tires size I should get, and if 4.5 backspacing will be ok.

It looks like most people here are running stock wheels with 1.5 spacers. Since I do not have the stock wheels, I want to buy some that will center the tire in the deepest part of the fender well. I am trying to keep the tire flush, or inside of the flare. I do not want this rig to spray the sides with mud and slush like my JK does.

I would like to run 265/70/17 all terrains, but don't want rubbing and would rather not endlessly mess with trying to modify for clearance. I am good with running 265/65/17 too.

Any one have pictures of their Commanders with the OME springs and aftermarket wheels?

I'm running the OME HD lift with Black Rock Series 997 17x8 Steel Wheels (4.5 inch of Backspace) with 285/70R17 MT/R's. I did some extra mods to fit the bigger tires so that I wouldn't have rubbing. There are pics of my Commander in my garage thread. If your going with 265's you will be fine as long as you do the pinch weld mod which is very easy to do

I am trying to find your garage thread, for some reason I can't.

The pinch weld is no big deal for me, I just hate cutting up plastic fender liners and reshaping stuff. Always end up being more of a PITA than it's worth.

I thought there was issues in using steel wheels with the Xk's calipers. I don't see how, since they are thinner than steel, but another thread had something about that.

Thanks for the advice.

I had to run 1/4 wheel spacers up front to clear the brake caliper mounting brackets with the steel wheels but they are still the same width and offset (back spacing) you were asking about

Then it's decided. I just have to figure out if I am going to do the install myself, or pay a shop to do it.

I have installed 4 lift kits, most much more intricate than what I am doing here. I also have my own airplane hangar and almost every tool Mac and Snap-on makes. I am an aircraft mechanic and can build or do anything with machines.

My problem right now is that I took a job in a 3 hour away town. We are moving there once we sell our house, but for now I commute home on the weekends.
Between getting our house ready to sell, and the 6 hours total of driving, my weekends are tight. Can't exactly do it in the parking lot of the apartment I live in during the week either.
I know I can get this done in a few hours, but I would have to rent a big spring compressor (mine is way too light) and then get an alignment (Monday through Friday only anywhere near where my hangar is) I have never really been satisfied with work I have had done, except a few time when I paid a buddy (but he is in Oregon) and only because is as picky as me. At least it is an easy job and shouldn't get too screwed up.

So, my final plane is the above mentioned wheels, 265/70/17 All Terrains, and OME HD springs, struts and shocks.

Stage two will be a hitch and wiring for the trailer brakes. Then that is until I put a little money into my recently paid off, almost to 100K mile JK unlimited rubicon.

I have driven the Commander about 100 miles so far, changed to oil, and fixed a few little things in the interior. I really like it so far, even with the 22's on it.

One more question for you guys. I have a slight clunky rattle over rough roads. I am sure to 35 series tires amplify it. Nothing is worn or loose that I was able to find while I had it on jacks this morning. I read here that people have replaced the isolators, which I will do. Did anyone notice a pretty good rattle that went away after new isolators?

This picture is of 265/70/17? Wow, nothing else but the OME HD lift? I really can't wait. Did you have any rubbing at all?

No rubbing at all. I did do the pinch weld mod before I put the wheels and tires on. I had 255s on with stock wheels before this set up and had a slight rub at full turn. I do have robbys spacers up front to level the OME lift.

I am about to pull the trigger on some black rock 908 wheels. do you know if 17" steel wheels don't fit for all brands or is it a case by case basis?

I'm going with the aluminum wheels but im trying to make sense of the issue so I know if they will fit over the caliper.

also, any advice on the offset? I am going with 17x8, 4.5 backspace.

Lastly, there seems to be a couple center bore sizes. does this need to be the same as the factory center bore size (71.5mm)?
