Usb power!

Anybody install USB plugs into your rides? I'd really like to get a dual plug setup for the phone and iPod.

If anybody's done it, please post pics.

Ughhhh... borrrrrring.... I'm married with a young child. Projects like this keep me going.

I can only do so much land scaping, home improvements, or wash my motorcycles, and my cars so many times before I start yawning. This summer I built a really nice paver patio, gazebo, and flower boxes. I redesigned a bathroom. I wrapped one of my motorcycles and the dash in my Jeep with 3M Di-Noc (bad to the bone). I tinted my windows on the Commander, replaced the shocks (no lift. This is still my family car) and cruised junk yards with hopes of finding a Commander Limited with a great condition dark interior to chop up and redesign my sport interior to be black and tan... now, tho, I am onto much more sophisticated modifications, well more sophisticated, at least. For starters, I want 2 USB ports

Time at home... I got plenty of it, just need to fill it..

I am on a budgeted long-ish-term quest to build this Jeep into what I think it should have been from the factory, yet to an untrained eye, it'll be virtually stock looking. If only I could pursuade my wife into new chrome wheels.

This might be useful to your project. Haven't tired it myself yet though.

I could see routing some kind of panel to the back of the center console that is powered for the rear passengers to use. That might be a pretty cool job. Then again you could mount 2 new power accessory ports to the back and then use it for whatever type of power you need whether it be usb, phone charger, electric cooler. etc.

So lets attack that boredom...

I don't know if you are handy with a soldering iron, but if you are - pick up the following parts (one set per USB plug):

5Volt 3Amp Voltage Regulator
http://www.jameco.com/1/1/3193-lm323...og-linear.html

USB Port
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/sto...001_2097011_-1

2 49.9K resistors
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/sto...001_2080382_-1

1 75K resistor
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/sto...001_1887926_-1

1 http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/sto...001_1887168_-1

you might also want a heat sink for the voltage regulators - they get HOT with load.
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/sto...type=jamecoall

follow this wiring guide for the USB port use a +12V Accessory on lead behind the dash - maybe from the always on cig lighter jack.
http://thecustomgeek.com/2011/08/03/...phone-or-ipod/

Where you have the VCC that is the OUTPUT connector of the voltage regulator
Where you have GRD is the GROUND/COMMON of the voltage regulator AND vehicle ground.
on the voltage regulator where you have INPUT is the +12V ACC or Always on feed from the vehicle.

I think it should be up to you to find the place to put these. I chose the 3A regulators even though the referenced project uses a 2A becuase the new iPads use a 2.5A charger. Also the USB 3.0 specification goes up to 3A.

Good luck and show me some pics when you are done. Personally I would think that one iof the switch blanks by the seat heaters at the bottom of the dash center above the cig lighter ports would be great.
