front tow hooks

ok so after playing in the mud last night with my buddy i realised i seriously need to sit down a figure out my front tow hook situation (or lack there of).

can you guys post up pix of your tow hooks/ rings i am going to use my factory bumper and dont want to add a matrix or bull bar...

and if some one has a really good picture of the factory tow hook mounts with the bumper on that would be great

im kind of thinking of fabbing a bracket that mounts on the factory tow hook mounts but uses D-shackles..

Just as an FYI, last I heard from Russ he's going to start offering the Matrix basic again, which is nothing like the full Matrix I have. All the basic kit does is offer the brackets to mount up D-rings (and the optional 2" receiver down the road, if you'd like).

Sounds like exactly what you're thinking of fabbing, and it'd save you the time. Just a thought.

If I was to do it again I would go for these with Shackles.

Odd, I thought all Commanders had the 2 front tow hooks standard. Is it just the Limiteds with them or what? I have 2 black ones on the front of mine and doubt the last owner put them on.

Ha I wish, not even Limited models got tow hooks as a standard. It was an option just like the skid plate package. I just hate to think I have to spend over $100 to get two front hooks.

edit: Those D-ring shackles look pretty nice and about the same price as the OEM hooks. Are there any pro's or con's to a D-ring set up over the OEM style of open hooks?

This is a good question. My $.02:

Tow hooks are much easier to use -- no pin to pull in order to slip on a tow line -- but that also makes the line more likely to slip loose. For this reason, D-rings are essentially more safe, since the pull line cannot slip off the shackle. This is especially true of angled-line pulls, when the pulling isn't made straight-on with the direction of the vehicle -- and the majority of pulls are angled-line of one degree or another.

I also think D-rings also look cooler.

If the Saguaro kit includes nothing but what their website says it does, I would personally recommend considering other options. The Matrix and the OEM tow hooks utilize Mopar's backing plate bracket for a good reason: because Jeep's engineers know that at heavy load you'll rip accessories right off without it.

(Looking at Saguaro's picture more closely it looks like you might be able to get Mopar's backing plate and use it with the Saguaro kit -- thus mimicking 4xGuard's set-up. No guarantees on that, but it could maybe work.)
