Full length roof rack

So I'm wondering how much interest there might be for a kind of roof rack like the ones for Land Rovers. Our XKs have a lot of real estate up top, it's a shame not to take advantage of it. I've been a fan of full-roof racks ever since the old Camel Trophy days (those rigs were uber cool!).

I stopped by a local shop in Northern NJ to ask about fabricating something like this (see picture). This is an established shop that does custom fabrication of all sorts. The guy in the office was very encouraging about making this. His fabricator is out this week, so I wasn't able to talk about any details or pricing. This rack would certainly be pretty strong, as I told him I would want to be able to put a spare wheel plus other supplies up there. However, as always, pricing improves when you order more. Would anyone else be interested? What would you be willing to pay...? ...up to $500? ...$800 ...$1000? Chime in.

Doesn't the Rola Roof rack have an optional extension? I'm not sure if its full length or not.

I haven't found anything that will go all the way to the a-pillar/windshield. Also, there is nothing that follows the roof line either.

The guys at the shop never got back to me, and I haven't had the time to chase them down or find another shop. I haven't given up yet, though!

The Gobi Rack for a H2 if you mount it right on the rails will only be up in the front a few inches. They have a deflector plate that fills the gap. They even have a bolt down panel that goes over the sunroof location and a built in Tire Carrier for those of us with bigger than stock tires. Being a bit higher off the roof line in the front will give it the room for the sunroof to open in "Vent" position just under the rack floor.

I thought about getting one of these but they are expensive. I figured a shop could do almost the same rack for 3-4 hundred cheaper.

Did you do a test fit with that Gobi H2 rack? I'm trying to find something full length...

I did not test fit it, I just measured the dimensions of the stated racks on their site and compared what would "Best" fit the Commander.

I'm probably going to have a local guy make the same exact rack, with the tire holder and sunroof cover for about $500 bucks. Most of that is labor, the material is only about 100 bucks.

I think this guy can do a better job than Gobi as well, I watched a YouTube video of a guy who reviewed the rack and the finish, particularly the welds were not up to par with a rack that they are charging $1600 for. Some of them looked like a Highschool Shop student did them.

Maybe this is a dumb idea but what about starting off with a Megawarrior with the extension and modifying it, via a fab shop? If you attached a smaller second basket to the front of it, maybe you could come up with something that would work. Maybe attach a load warrior to it?

Of course the megawarrior and extension is like $500 on their own, but I've seen used ones pop up for half the cost.
