Fishing Rod Holders

One of the reasons I bought my Commander was that I love to spend time outdoors...especially fishing. I was worried about transporting my rods in the interior and having a fishing buddy break them. I thought about using one of the hanging rod racks which are made to attach to interior coat hooks and keep the rods overhead, but the Commander isn't outfitted properly to make this a plug and play proposition.

I decided to mount 2 travel rod tubes to my Rola cargo rack. The travel tubes are available in different sizes to accommodate different length rods, and are meant to protect them during airline travel and the like.

I simply used stainless worm gear clamps to attach the tubes to my rack and then covered the clamps with black electrical tape. The tape wasn't necessary but it suits my preference for aesthetics. if you don't have a rack, they can be clamped to the crossbars.

A bonus is that the tubes came with a lockable. hinged end cap, and are already foam lined on the ends to help protect the fragile tips.

I priced out the materials at my local big box hardware store, and these tubes were within $5 of the DIY price, so it was a no-brainer. Mine are 7' 2" long, and match my Commander's color scheme

Not sure how weatherproof they will be due to the riveted end caps. I'll also be watching the internal temperatures to make sure the rod guide epoxies/glues don't soften.

I'm pretty happy with how they came out.

What do you do when you are fishing out of town for a week? Break all your rods down? I have been using my Thule lockable ski racks for the ten years with no problems. I do like your set up for travel if I were to spend an overnite. Very clean. Years ago(40) I did use PVC pipe with the screw in ends but found too many guides damaged.
