Cool Project #2: LED Exterior Lighting

Starting with LED low beam headlamps. These things are no joke! I'd love any input from anyone who's had experience with these.

I got these from Amazon on sale for under $40 for the pair and did a little tryout tonight. Impressive results, some little differences from halogen:

1. The bulbs are a straight 9006 replacement for the low beams
2. The bulbs each have a tiny fan in them to dissipate heat (yes, on an LED) and they make a bit of a humming noise.
3. They do create a lot of heat but probably not as much as halogen.
4. When you turn them off, they go into cool-down mode in which they dim and flicker for about 20 seconds then turn off.

Some pics attached. I took a little video too.

Bob, that looks nice. I have looked into these also. Which brand did you go with?
My main concern w the LED bulbs is the durability and longevity of them. I have had mixed results w LEDs in my house as I am converting all of them over slowly. Some are fine, others only last a month. Price doesn't seem to matter.
Keep us updated. I'm hoping you have no issues. Good luck.

Btw- the XK is looking really good.

The brand is Simdevanma. Got these with a code good for one day. I'm sure it will roll around again. Says they have a 2-year warranty and I'm just the type of person who will make sure they honor it.

High beams, Fogs and off-road bar are next.

I'll take a look at taillamps in the future.

Gonna get some for the minivan too once the deal comes around again.

OK, small problem. The lights are on dimly and flickering when driving even when the switch is off. Not a bad idea for DRLs.

After some investigation, it looks like it's due to the CANBUS system. An extra cable is needed (of course).

Anyway, I think I'll do it and see if it fixes the problem.

I went a different route and went with true LED high and low beams by Putco;

They are expensive but they come with everything you need including anti-flicker harnesses.

OK, update. The lights dimming and flickering when turning off was definitely due to CANBUS. The company sent me an adapter and everything works 100% now. Next, I need to look at doing the other lights. The fogs look horrible compared to the headlights now.
