What is the width of the OEM cross rail?

Looking at different racks available and some require certain specs for the width of the rails their mounted to, so as asked in the heading what is the width of the standard cross rail? Thanks

Three and a half inches.

Are the rails solid metal that I could grind a 1/4" notch on each side to accomadate the bracket

Well they are flatter than the sport model but they are more oval than they are flat.
