Curb rash

I’ve spent the better part of the last year getting my Commander mechanically sound. It’s going to be awhile until I can complete the OME lift, rims and larger tires. Just replaced rotors/pads. While I had tires removed, thought it was a good time to repair the curb rash and repaint the stock rims. Plasti Dip looks alright, but I prefer the appearance of high gloss black.

First, I washed the rim. The curb rash thankfully wasn’t significant, so I used green Scotch Brite pad to smooth surface. Then I rewashed, wiped down and let dry.

I used 4x6 index cards around the rim to protect the tire from overspray and painter’s tape on the air valve. Added multiple layers of self etching primer and multiple layers of high gloss black. Really happy with how they came out. Makes a huge difference until I can replace the rims and get bigger tires.

I like the idea of the 4x6 cards. Masking off the tire can be challenging. Looks good.

In my opinion, that high gloss black you picked looks 100 times better than plasti-dipped rims I've seen in the past, nice work.

Speaking from experience, you'll probably find your painted wheels much easier to damage for awhile. I painted a set of wheels, let them dry for about a week before I put them near any danger, and instantly gouged through the paint on a fairly easy trail with a small stick.

I figured as much. Although any damage will most likely occur in the McDonald’s drive thru. Will be a while before I can do any trailing. Was getting ready to lift my Commander. Ordered a RC lift kit... someone had ordered one and never installed it, it was brand new in the box. But the USPS absolutely destroyed the package. It went from New York to Detroit in less than 24 hours and then suddenly disappeared for five days. When it showed back up under tracking it was on its way back to New York. When it was returned to the sender the box was wet and mutilated and all of the parts were completely rusted. This was actually a blessing in disguise as I have decided OME lift is what I’d prefer. But my son just had a lacrosse tournament in Indianapolis which set me back over $700 and once I got home I needed to replace the rotors and pads. So it will be a while before I can install the lift and UCAs. Since I have the 3.7 I also want to install a locker.

I used the Rustoleum wheel paint a couple times and have been pretty impressed with the longevity. You definately did it right, multiple primer and finish coats are critical.

Had lug bust on me. It was so freaking hot already and that broken lug cost me an hour and a half Saturday night. Only got the front done. I will make sure I update the “after” pics ASAP.

It’s been raining almost every day so this is the first chance I’ve had. Didn’t have chance to wash so the rims don’t appear glossy...but under the dirt they’re nice and shiny!
