2010 Jeep Commander Key Replacement

Today my wife called and said that our dog got ahold of our/her extra key to the commander and tore it all to hell. The key insert is fine and is still usable.

I was wondering if there a good place to go and purchase one of these keys and take to dealer to get programmed. The reason why I want to find the key someplace else is because the dealer is charging $266. But can program a key for $74.

Your help is greatly appreciated. http://americankeysupply.com/images/...commander4.jpg

I just looked and there are some on ebay. Some "Buy It Now" for $50, and some with bidding. Forum rules prevent me from giving you a link but on Ebay Motors under "Parts and Accessories" put "jeep commander key" in the search and you will find them. I also went to e-bay and they scheduled an oil change at the dealership and they programmed the key for free - nothing to it - good luck.

Yea, 2010 M/Y they removed the ability to program additional keys yourself, you must bring the vehicle to the dealer, with all your keys, NOT just the ones you want programmed, and pay them to have it programmed.

On the Easter Egg Sticky, yegster explained that dealership employees were running scams to copy keys and steal vehicles, so the Insurance Companies insisted Chrysler remove the ability to program keys youself, if only the dealer can do it with their special tool, at least there is paper trail. So the dealer screws up and the customer gets punished, while they get rewarded.

The FOBIK has an RFID chip in it to start the car, the remote entry stuff to unlock doors, etc is totally seperate. So unless the dog chewed up the key so bad, he pulled the little RFID chip out of it, it should still work to start the vehicle. (I.E. might as well keep the old chewed up one on hand as an emergency spare). Keep in mind the vehicle can only be programmed for 8 keys its entire life.

E-Bay is where I got my spare keys, my dealer charged one fee for all the keys I could give him, so I stocked up several before going in to have the job done, instead paying all over again for every extra key I picked up.

I have purchased a few keys from http://americankeysupply.com, BUT, they only sell to professional locksmiths. They will send you a quizz to answer questions to prove your a locksmith, and it is tough enough you're NOT going to be able to google all the answers.

Psst: I sent back the quiz anyway, even though half of it was blank, figured I had nothing to lose, and it did take a couple of weeks, but they e-mailed me and gave me an account. I may have just slipped through the cracks, so don't count on getting products from their site.
