Noisy catalytic converter

I've recently purchased a 2007 Jeep Commander 3.0 crd Limited. Lovely car of course but there has been a niggly, rattly noise which seems to happen at low revs. Been back to the garage and he says it's the catalytic converter which is rattling. They tell me a new one would cost 1200 or 1800 depending on which it is. Is it necessary to change a noisy cat (it didn't fail its MOT) and is 1200/1800 a realistic price?

Converter info

Converters become rattly from quick cool downs from being hot. Water splashes etc... Could cause a shuttering of acceleration or a loss of speed or power due to a clog. Price .... ? $175.00 to $250.00. Not sure! ???
