Exhaust manifold repair $550 at Midas?!?

Just got a call from Midas to fix my exhaust manifold. They want $550!!! That includes all labor, new gasket and new studs for the manifold since they have to drill out two of the studs. Am I wrong, or is that a little high for that job?

If anyone has thoughts, please answer ASAP as I'm waiting a few to give them a call back.

Update: they'll do it for $475, so I told them to do it and I'll bite the bullet so I don't risk warping the manifold later on. Glad I have an emergency fund for these things!

Why did they go from $550 to $75 ? That is a huge difference.

They didn't, meant to type $475!

Plus I called another shop I've done business with and they said that Midas was in the ballpark, so that's why I made the call.

Two broken studs, apparently its a common problem with the 4.7 engines. The Midas guy said they do two to three of these a month.

The Ford 460 engine that was used in many motorhomes was noted for having a similar problem of breaking manifold bolts or studs. The problem was often caused when cresting a long pull up a mountain pass followed by rapid cooling of the engine as it coasted down the reverse side of the mountain. The heating of the manifold during the long pull would strech the bolts and then the rapid cooling would snap the bolts. I am just saying that this might give some insight as to why manifold bolts break.

We just had that problem with our F250 at work. Ford used like 1/4" studs to install the manifold. (idiots)

Which studs were a problem on the 4.7? That is the motor I have. Any suggestions on preventative action?

Two studs on the driver's manifold, I didn't see which ones actually broke. I replaced all of them as a precaution while the manifold was off.

No suggestions, I think its just a random event.

It's happened to me twice now...still haven't fixed the second time. Really having a hard time justifying the $400+ repair cost of something that'll probably just break again in a few months...
