Towing the Distance

I have been checking-out this site for a while and everyone seems pretty well versed in Commanders so I was hoping you can help me.

I just purchased my second Commander and have some towing questions.

Here are the details:
2007 3.7L V6 2X4 Rocky Mountain edition.
It has a towing package.
It also has a transmission cooler (I was told).

I'm not truck savvy so I have no idea what gears are in it or anything else I should know.

I'm in the process of purchasing a boat that I will be pulling in and out of the water. I will also being pulling the boat from South Florida to Long Island NY every summer. Because of the 3500# tow limit, I'm pretty limited on the size of the boat I can purchase.

I'm looking at a boat/motor/trailer combo that will weigh about 2800-3100 LBS.

So here are my questions:
Can this truck handle this weight for such a long haul?
do I need a sway bar?
Do I need to have brakes on the trailer?
What mods should I make to the truck or trailer to make sure I have no issues, without breaking the bank.

Any help is appreciated.

Your Commander has 3.07 gears with the 3.7 liter. Trailer brakes are always a good idea when towing, and if it was my rig I'd recommend it. You might want to look into purchasing a tuner that has a tow setting. Not needed but would definitely help out. And lastly, if you stay under the recommended weight, you will be fine.

i have the exact same vehicle as you do and ive pulled many trailers from about 1900 lbs to about 4000 lbs and i pulled the 4000 lbs for about an hr through hills and what not and the XK handled pretty nice.

Cabledawg, Do you have a tranny cooler? i was told I have one and there is definitely something in front of my radiator but i have no clue.

to be honest i have no clue. im pretty sure i dont cause i put an aftermarket hitch on.

hey guys there is actually a tranny cooler right in front of the radiator. Here is a post of someone that added another one in series.

The tranny cooler and AC condenser are one. It is located directly in front of the radiator. The smaller cooler up front is the power steering cooler.

Marrrs; Was yours a factory package, class II hitch? Or an after factory hitch?

I am researching these threads because I want to add an oil cooler to my 2009 3.7 V6, that did not come stock with a Tow Package. I did find a VIN for a 3.7 that came with stock tow package. The dealership ran the Build List for that vehicle and mine. We compared and found no additional components, other than the hitch, and the rear suspension was the same as mine. (The other vehicle came with the Class II hitch)

I just installed the factory, Class III hitch to pull my small motorcycle trailer, and garden trailer, which are less than 3500 lbs fully loaded. (already had many receivers from my old Grand Wagoneer's) But I still plan on adding the oil cooler, and maybe a fan.

If you read through the whole trans cooler thread referenced within this thread you'll see that the gentleman had inadvertently added the aftermarket trans cooler to the power steering cooling circuit.

Ahmed posted some pics from the factory repair manual and it clearly shows that the trans cooler is integrated into the engine coolant radiator. So if you wanted extra cooling for your trans fluid, you'd have to add it in series AFTER the radiator.

Actually the trans cooler is integrated into the Condensor for the AC, mounted in front of the engine radiator and the power steering cooler is mounted in front of the Condesor/trans cooler.

The trans cooler uses quick disconnect fittings, so something would have to be improvised to splice into the lines.

Trans Temp Gauge would be a good thing to have. I've towed a 2700lb car w/ dolly with my 3.7L/NAG1 commander and factory cooler, no factory tow package, I added the hitch and didn't add any extra cooling, but the temp gauge. The trans ran the same temp or only slightly higher, still under 150F the whole trip. When I drove slow through a residential neighborhood, the temp jumped up to 200F for a minute, then got right back down once I got moving straight and a bit faster again.
