Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

I purchased my 4.7L commander with 32 miles on it and kept it under 55mph for the first 300 miles as the manual suggested, at 450 miles I took a 1200 mile road trip, basically cruise control set on 70 mph for most of the way.

My friend told me today I may have damaged my engine keeping it at such high speeds for a sustained period of time when its new, and that I should have varied my speed and RPM.

What gives? Did i do any real damage here?

Re: Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

I've never owned a new vehicle that I didn't drive at highway speeds within the first 300 miles and I took a long trip in my former WJ the day I picked it up (with 17 miles on the ODO). Nor have I ever experienced engine problems that were not related to normal wear and tear and age.

I also took mine on a road trip with less than 200 miles on it, Your not going to damage it unless you really try.

break it in like you're going to drive it. You've caused no damage.

Re: Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

i used to build engines and one of the best things for it was to take it on a road trip after a short period of running it through the RPM range. don't worry, you didn't hurt anything.

Re: Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

I took my commander out of town averaging speed about 70 mph and it only had 56 miles. I asked the dealership if I had damage anything and told me no. No to worry my trip was 130 miles round trip.

Re: Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

I think they were referring to seating of the piston rings, which probably happened long before you ever drove the car (between testing of the motor itself, and driving of the vehicle around the lot and test drives). A highway trip at this point is not an issue.

Re: Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

Just change out the break in oil and filter and drive.

Re: Break in period? beyond 300 miles...

I used to get into a brand new police car with like 12 miles on it & then maybe later that night drive it up over 100mph WOT & just generally beat the thing. Our cars would take that abuse & more & still pur like a kitten for 100K miles or more. Its all in the maintenance. I doubt that there is much that you can do to hurt the engine in your normal driving except not maintain it. The idea that an engine needed breaking in is a holdover from years ago when not as much was known in terms of building these engines & tolerances were not as precise & oil not as specific.
