Question How do you hold it?

This question came up in lxforums.com and I thought I would ask here.

When cruising 10 and 2. If I'm in light traffic, 12 with hand on shifter.

As far as grip style goes I never wrap my thumb around the wheel. The reason I do that is if I should be unfortunat enough to wreck, my hands will come off the wheel without bending my thumbs backwards causing a nasty and painful break.

I learned this way before I ever had a four wheel drive vehicle. I was watching a Land Rover something or other on Discovery channel or something like that and they spoke of not wrapping your thumb around the steering wheel in case one of your tires fell into a rut.

I think it is a good rule of thumb. No pun intended. Okay, maybe a little bit.

Re: How do you hold it?

When I'm cruising, I hold at the bottom of the wheel - one handed. With the other I'm eating, drinking, or something else.

Re: How do you hold it?

i've heard the same thing about not wrapping the thumbs for the same reason, so i don't.
usually i hold the wheel at the bottom because of an elbow and shoulder injury, its just more comfy. i used to hold at 12:00 before.

I wish the top of my head looked like that! Oh well.

That picture was from the Ford Explorer Sport Trac that I traded for the XK.

As you can see by that picture I am filthy rich. My gas tank was nearly full. LOL!

Re: How do you hold it?

If only one hand, the left at between 10 and 11.

If both hands, 10 and 5. My right arm (at 5) rests on my leg and I kind of lightly grip the wheel between fingertips and thumb. I can grab on quickly if I need to.

I don't wrap my thumbs either, though I never saw advice not too. It's just more comfortable and easier to move my hands around when turning the wheel.

Re: How do you hold it?

I drive with hands around 5 and 7 o'clock on the wheel. Never at 10 and 2. 10 and 2 can cause you to over correct or jerk the wheel in certain conditions. The weight of yours hands at the top of the wheel can cause pull to the left or right when using aggressive maneuvers. At 5 and 7 you can sit relaxed and just pass the wheel from hand to hand in which ever direction you are going. Your arms never have to leave the top of your legs.

I believe that the law enforcement types out there that have been through "offensive" driving school could verify this.

Re: How do you hold it?

10 and 2 most of the time. Hovever, sometimes with all the windows down and sunroof open, it's good to have the left arm relaxing on the windowsill and the right hand at 12 o' clock.
