Gear whine

I have a 2006 4.7 Commander with approx 15,000 miles on it. It has a gear whine in it which is loudest at about 68 mph. You don't hear it below about 40 mph and it becomes less loud, although still present, above 72 or so. It is only present when there is a load on the power train. Let off the gas and it goes away. It was not present when the vehicle was new and has become louder in the last 5000 miles or so. It seems to be downstream of the transmission because the noise does not change if the transmission downshifts. I suspect it is coming from the transfer case or one of the differentials, although it does not seem to be coming from the front of the vehicle. My dealer tells me that it is normal for a Commander. I don't think so or there would be more about it on this forum. Anybody else have this problem or have any ideas about a solution? Except for this problem, the vehicle is great and I really don't want to get rid of it. But the noise is really annoying. Thanks for your help.

Re: Gear whine

Time to service the diffs. Although, mine doesn't do this at 28k.

Re: Gear whine

I am noticing that on mine. A whrrring sound sounds like it is coming from the middle of the vehicle. need a slight load on it to make the noise. Mine starts at about 45 and it does disappear but I am not sure at what speed. I only have 6k on it and never offroaded yet.

An update on my 2006 4x4 4.7 Commander and its gear whine. The second dealer I took my 2006 Commander to went with me on a test ride and agreed the noise wasn't supposed to be there. From inside the vehicle you couldn't tell where it was coming from. The dealer's mechanic thought it was coming from the front but he said it sounded like a rear differential. Turned out it was the rear differential. They replaced seals, bearings, and gears and the noise is gone. Looks like the Commander will be with me for the next ten years or so. I typically keep cars that long and I love this one.

I'm noticing a trend of Commanders having issues with people who don't take them offroad. I think going off-road does something to a Jeep that helps keep it running smooth. If you don't let it play once in awhile, it gets depressed - all these noises and whines sound like symptoms of depression.
