Angry Not starting

So after working a reverse double, midnights, 12p-8a, then a day shift 8a-4p I finally get back to the Troop I work at to get into the commander and go home after a looooong 16 hours of dealing with the public in their time of emergency and bitching about every little thing they think law enforcement should and should not do about their neighbors and speeders etc (see how this is going?). I turn the key and the commander doesn't start....NOTHING, just a click, a single click sound. The gauges all come on, the radio comes on A/c starts blowing, but NO ENGINE. I tried several times checked everything and even put the battery jump on the battery and it read full, i still tried to jump it anyway but nothing! i call the dealership (meadowland of Carmel NY) they tell to me to get under the Jeep and tap the starter with a hammer and try rocking the Jeep, so after working 16 long hours I'm laying in the middle of a HOT parking lot trying to get the Jeep to start with a hammer!!! After about 2.5 hours of banging different parts and rocking it etc i had it towed...now it has 46,000 miles so the roadside has ended as did the warranty, so far im at $4.00 a mile for the tow, nearest dealership is 15 miles from where I work and where the Jeep is, and thats NOT the dealership I have been using, they are 34 miles away from where I work, and top of it all I need a new starter most likely. I can't believe on a 2006 vehicle with under 50,000 miles and im replacing the starter already I had a 1986 Ford Bronco II with over 200k and it still had the ORIGINAL starter, I'm thinking about $400 or so in parts in labor PLUS the tow bill.....there goes that overtime I killed myself working for today.

Man that does suck, when they find out the true problem be sure to give us a update. Like you, I think 46,000 is way too quick for a starter to go out.
Good luck brother...

Thats a bummer,,,,I had the same exact thing happen to my 96
Grand Cherokee when it was new with like 10k on it. I still have that GC with over 180K on it now. It was the only time since that I ever had to have it towed. Turns out it was just a bad coil. Hopefully you will have the same experience & not have another problem for at least 150K. Thats part of the reason that I stick with Jeep, they have been very reliable vehicles for me.

By the way I know exactly what you mean by dealing with the public.
Spent over 20 years as LEO. Good luck & most of all, be careful out there!

My favorite saying is "the masses are asses"!! I know your feeling. I was President of our Homeowners Assn for 4 years. Damn near drove me nuts. Had to resign or I would have ended up killing someone. At least you have a badge. I got calls at home all hours of the day and night for everything you can imagin from no garbage pickup to neighbors being loud, cats meowing etc etc. Seems today people just dont want to do anything for themselves, just call someone else and pass the buck. john

I hope it was the park sensor. Did you try starting the car in "N"?

I had to replace the starter in my 06 at 22k. The dealership did believe me when I brought in , on a flatbed. The also replaced the battery and it tested good when AAA came out to start it, but the dealer said it tested bad. Fortunately it was all warrenty work.

A lot of sorry's but not much help.....I imagine you have it started by now. If so, what was it? IF not, you may have a problem with the security chip in the key. Look for a TSB. Try the neutral switch in the shifter, last try the sensor in the radiator. Yeah the radiator. Things get weird. BTW-thank you for your service.

You can go online and find the TSB's ( technical service bulletins) for the commander. Look thru those as well. I found them on one of the formum sites.

After 3 days of being in the shop and hearing the service manager tell me it wasn't the starter.....it left the dealership with a new starter, $232.32 later which actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. They tested everything including the battery and every other imaginable system they could, but in the long run it was the starter. When I asked them if this was a common problem he said he had never heard of a commander needing a new starter and their parts supplier "questioned" them when they ordered the part.
