Does the Rubicon Tranfer Case work in XK?

I was wondering if the XK's Transmission mounts up the Rubicon's Rocktac transfer case?

does anyone know? just out of curiosity, i'd also like to make my XK just part time 4 wheel drive. not really anytime soon. but i'm just more curious about the possibilities. i'm thinking hopefully in a few years when i have this thing paid off i'll go with a 9" rear and a 9" custom front axle with D60 outers and full lockers front and rear.

Wow, that would be a project... not only would you have to worry about mounting it up but you would have to install the shifter linkage, etc. since it is a manual shift instead of the XK's electronic switch.

Also, if you switch the transfer case or axles you are going to probably drive the vehicles electronics crazy. This isn't a Wrangler or an old Cherokee.

If you could get the case to bolt on then i dont think that it would be to hard. There is nothing hard about installing the shifter linkage, and its not that hard to get custom driveshafts made if for some reason the transfer case was longer or shorter then ours. If you can take a full time 4x4 explorer and eassily change it to a manual transfer case then there is no reason we cant. It just takes a little more knowledge then someone who can barley change the oil on their own truck!

Its like converting a auto transmission to a manual...people do it everyday.

I guess if you've got the base transfer case without electronics it would be easier. Although I'm not familiar with the Rubicon's Rock Trac or if it has any electronics. I would probably go with something older like a 242, a 231 or an aftermarket unit.

If anyone would know it's these guys

i was under my jeep yesterday checking stuff out..

i think it could be done. you could do a cable actuated shifter.

the main problems i saw.

1. the rear driveshaft is aluminum and has a harmonic balancer
2. the front driveshaft is punny, i can't believe how small it is. my toyota had one that was twice the size in slip yoke and u-joints.

the easy part would be fabricating the crossmember. and hopefully the rocktrac is about the same size. i'm sure you could get an adapter made to get the transfer case on the transmission.

anything is possible with enough money.

I can't find any pics of the NV140, I guess I could crawl under mine but it seems like all the cases are of the same design. I'm thinkin the case to trans bolt pattern may be the same.

hmmm you guys got me interested in this. Like i stated before if it would bolt on to our transmission then the hard part is done.

This is a few things you would have to look into if it bolted up:

- Custom made front and rear drive shafts (can easily be made)
- Custom center console
- Custom Cross Member
- Shifter Linkage / shifter location

This is totally possible......... All it would take is a complete removal of the engine and drive train, custom mounts for new transfer case, new axles, custom drive shafts, run it old school, eliminate the computers, new dash, instruments, brake system, then you'd have a smaller unibody Wagoneer....... Please note sarcasm ;-)

Just looking at case pics it looks like the case on the Commander uses the 12 outer bolt circle as opposed to the 6 inner on the Rock Trac to bolt to the trans. The Rock Trac also has 12 outer bolts holding the cover on the case. Maybe just swap the rear covers, Nah, too easy.
