Question Wanting to buy 2008 Jeep Commander

Hi there,

I have never posted anything on a forum before, so hi everyone ... I have a few questions about the Commander and am hoping you all can help me. I currently own a 2005 Infiniti FX35. I bought it because I had an Audi TT and was moving to the mountains where I needed something more like an SUV to get through the snow and what not. I also liked the way it looked, and the salesman told me that it's all-wheel drive would do just fine in the snow... it doesn't.

I hope to go to a Jeep dealership this weekend to see about buying one and this time around I want to be a little bit more educated about what I am buying so here are my questions: Does the Commander drive well in snow? I saw on the website there are several different models of the Commander, which one is the best or do you all recommend? There is the 5 & 7 passenger Sport, The Limited, The Rocky Mountain, and The Overland, I know I want one that is fully loaded and 4x4 wheel drive. Also, what is the difference between all-wheel drive and 4 wheel drive? I have been told they are basically the same and that they are completely different, so who knows!

you won't have any problems with snow in a commander. even with the 3.7 and the QT1 its unstoppable.

You could find a great deal on a 07 Limited or Overland. Dealers are offering 10K to 12K off MSRP.

Looking at the vehicles you have owned in the past I think you would be happiest with the Overland. Its GOT IT ALL. We just love our 07 Overland. The Commander is an extremely stable vehicle. Havent had it in snow as we live in Fla. (though that will change as moving West in January) but have been through TORRENTIAL rainstorms and it hugs the road like a rock. The absolutely only negative thing I can say is the gas mileage sucks. Thats to be expected in a heavy vehicle like a Commander. We the 5.7 L Hemi dont expect more then 15 around town and 17 on trip and thats if you drive very carefully. Also, it takes 89 octane fuel (though it will run on 87 according to the book). john

I like John would suggest you go either with an Overland or a loaded Limited 4x4 (QDII) with the Hemi. The grin you get on your face when accelerating negates the frown you get on your face from watching the price on the gas pump keep going up. Unfortunately, there is no diesel option for the Commander in the US yet, otherwise I would suggest that.

Like jeep5253 said, the only difference is that true 4WD systems come with a low range option (useful on snow packed country roads, for off-roading, and for getting your vehicle unstuck). The QTI system is an all wheel drive system, while QTII and QDII are true 4WD systems. All three are very advanced and very capable systems.

Welcome to the forum. This place is very positive (compared to other forums) even when there is a difference of opinion.

In regards to your FX...
Our other veh is an 08 FX35 AWD. (Tech, Nav & Hands free) It is our second FX with the first being an 06 AWD (Sport and Hands Free). We also had a G35x with the same AWD system. Bottom line is that the ATTESA E-TS (AWD system) has fantastic traction in the snow.

I'm curious if yours is a Sport? The tires on the Sport have a very low snow rating and are no good in the mountains. Our new FX has the 18" rims and handles much better in wet/snow conditions.

If you have the Sport with 20" rims, consider snow tires or buying some "take-off" 18" rims and tires from somebody on an Infiniti forum. (InfinitiFX.org) I'd prefer the latter for convenience sake as you can simply swap the wheels/tires as needed vs going to a tire shop for mounting and balancing. Also, take-off tires & wheels will cost less than a set of snow tires for 20" rims.

Oh yeah... as for your consideration for the Commander. Go for the Overland. You won't have to worry about which options to pick....there aren't any accept for rear DVD and maybe some wheel choices.

Welcome Aboard SusieQ. You won't have a problem in the snow. I am a flatlander so I cannot speak for the mountains other than to say I do like them when I visit. Last winter we had a real good dump of snow and quite frankly it was boring. Went through it like dry pavement almost. The QD2 does an excellent job of feeding the power to the right wheels seemlessly. Whatever your choice "enjoy and have fun"
