How high would gas have to get before you bail?

was just wondering with predictions of fuel prices getting close to $4 later this year at what point would you retreat and be forced to get something more fuel efficient.
I ponder this as I would really like to trade to an 08 Limited or Overland with a Hemi but if gas nears $4 would that be a dumb move? Resale is pretty poor now but that could really financially hurt if you needed to trade or sell and no one wanted a gas guzzler.
What's the options then at that point? A Liberty or Wrangler Unlimited don't really get that much better mileage.
Just some things to think about.

I have placed an order for a 2008 smart (40+ mpg) so that when gas does go up I can use it as my primary vehicle and the Jeep for fun.

if gas climbs higher and higher, bailing out of your SUV wont help, cause you will loose so much money on your sale....IF you are bailing out, who do you think will by your used SUV....I would say if you need a vehicle that gets good mileage, get a scooter.....my Commander gets 18-19 most of the time...and get 22 on the good days....thats pretty good concidering the safety it has for my family.....Those tiny care that get good mileage are death traps....people dont live through accidents in them.....i have seen it first hand.....Can you put a price on your life......You need gas to get from point a to point b.....it sucks that the price is getting higher, but peopl might just try driving7-8 MPH slower.... you will gain back most of your mileage....and balance it out....Our hwys her are 75 mph....people drive 80....sure milege sucks....if you just drive 65, you will get better mileage.....in the end i think people are pay more for "time" than fuel.....I wont a bail i love my jeep and love what it can to when i need it....as prices go up i will just be more selective of where i go.......Plus we just got a patriot....it gets good mileage....and has all the jeep qualities.....

We all were already fore-warn on these beast machines. The price you pay for a vehicle like this, you should expect the price is well worth the safety. Although, you get a SmartCar, and you're most likely jeopardizing your own safety. I say tough it out. Plus, even if you 'bail', for sure the resale value will hurt you dearly. I rather take the hit in the pockets, than end up in the ER.

XKJeep06: I am not getting rid of my Commander, The smart is an additional vehicle. Also it is just as safe as any car on tHe road, it had to pass the 2008 safetly tests and has all the same airbags, anti-lock breaks, MDS, ESP, etc.

Hemi05WJ: when did you reserve yours? I reserved on June 30 and would hope to confirm this month, I am getting the Blue/Black/Black passion.

Even at 12.7 MPG and $5/gallon the price of gas doesn't really bother me.
I only drive 14 miles round trip to the office and average 900 miles/month total.
I absolutely love our '06 LTD Hemi

i have my 300ZX for gas mileage. they are fairly safe. i have seen them t-boned and in other wrecks, they hold up very well for a sports car. i get around 30-33 mpg with my 3.0L v6, i use cruise all the time.

but i also decided to take a new job back in wyoming. i currently work for a coal mine in the engineering department. i like what i do, but i travel 90 miles a day.

my new job, i will have a company vehicle, i'll be working on my Professional Surveyors License, and i will probably only live a couple of miles from work. i won't have to travel every week for an hour to stock up on groceries as well. there is a walmart in the town i will live in.

just buy an old beater that you don't care to much about that gets good mileage and is comfy. thats why i like my old Z. its a great highway car, handles well, goes faster then i need it to, and is fairly safe.

I won't be bailing on my Commander either, as gas prices go up and if I start feeling the pinch my answer will be to drive less and go slower. We have a Mini for commuting into Philly and little errands; the Commander for leisure, fun and family...

I wouldn't sell my Commander due to gas prices. I don't drive it enough to make an impact (over 15 months later and just hit 6000 miles on the odometer yesterday).

Even at $4.00 a gallon:
6000 miles / 16mpg (rounded down) = 375 gallons * $4.00/gallon = $1500.00 / 15 months = $100/month

The Commander is used mainly for road trips with it being driven to work maybe once a month.
