Electronic Range Select (Tiptronic) fails

Hi all, My 2006 Commander with the NAG1 tranny has suddenly had a failure with the Electronic Range Select (Tiptronic as it is sometimes referred to). Move the stick to - or + and there is no change to the maximum gear range.
This feature is useful when towing a heavy trailer downhill - you can limit the highest gear the auto will change up to thus maximising engine braking.
The problem is that is continually stops functioning and the Dealers are hopeless.
Has anyone had this problem - I have heard it is quite a common problem and the Shift Module (the control unit under the Shift Stick) has a fault. I have heard that the part number is 68004144AF - please help as I cannot even find anyone who can confirm the part number is correct let alone fix it!
