QDII Question

I finally took my Commander in some pretty serious mud this past weekend. I have the QDII system, so I turned off the ESP and left it in regular 4 Hi. When the mud got really tough and the Commander started to slip and really had to work to get through the mud, it made a clunk sound followed by a grinding noise. The commander did well and handled the mud better than most, but the clunk and grinding noise made me somewhat nervous. Has anyone else experienced it?

On the way out, I put it in 4Lo and it handled everything great. I saw a big improvement as far as handling between 4hi and 4lo. 4Hi did fine, but it would start to slide or bog down, and then make the noises and regain control and power out of the mud.

I was wondering if the clunk and grinding noise was normal or do I need to bring it in? My guess was it was redistributing the power, but was surprised by the noise.

its the brake activated traction control. mine does it all the time when i hit the gas on ice or snow, or i'm on three wheels while climbing obstacles. you'll get used to it.

Here are the instructions. Sorry they look like they do but that's how they turned out after copying and pasting them from my document folder.


NOTE:
To improve the vehicle’s traction when driving
with snow chains, or starting off in deep snow, sand, or
gravel, it may be desirable to switch to the “Partial Off”
mode by pressing the ESP switch. Once the situation
requiring ESP to be switched to the “Partial Off” mode is
overcome, turn ESP back on by momentarily depressing
the “ESP Control Switch”. This may be done while the
vehicle is in motion.

Full Off
This mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use
when ESP stability features could inhibit vehicle maneuverability
due to trail conditions. This mode is entered by
depressing and holding the “ESP Control Switch” for 5
seconds when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is
running. In this mode, all ESP and TCS stability features
are turned off except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS section. After 5 seconds, a chime will
sound, the ESP/TCS Indicator Light will illuminate,
and the ESP OFF message will appear in the Electronic
Vehicle Information Center (EVIC). Refer to “Electronic
Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)” in Section 4 of this
manual. (See page 186 for more information.) To turn ESP
on again, momentarily depress the ESP Control Switch.
This will restore the normal “ESP On” mode of operation.

NOTE:
The “ESP OFF” message will display and the
audible chime will sound when the gear selector is
placed into the “P” (Park) position from any position
other than “P” (Park), and then moved out of the “P”
(Park) position. This will occur even if the message was
previously cleared.

stability offered by ESP and ERM are unavailable. In
an emergency evasive maneuver, the ESP and ERM

4WD Low Range


Partial Off
This is the normal operating mode for ESP in 4WD low
range. Whenever the vehicle is started in 4WD low range,
or the transfer case (if equipped) is shifted from 4WD
high range or neutral to 4WD low range, the ESP system
will be in this mode. In 4WD low range, ESP and TCS,
except for the “limited slip” feature described in the TCS
section, are turned off until the vehicle reaches a speed of
30 mph (48 km/h). At 30 mph (48 km/h), the normal ESP
stability function returns but TCS remains off. When the
vehicle speed drops below 25 mph (40 km/h), the ESP
system shuts off. ESP is off at low vehicle speeds in 4WD
low range so that it will not interfere with off-road
driving but ESP function returns to provide the stability
feature at speeds above 30 mph (48 km/h). The
ESP/TCS Indicator Light will always be illuminated in 4WD
low range when ESP is off.

Full Off
This mode is intended for off-highway or off-road use
when ESP stability features could inhibit vehicle maneuverability

“ESP/TCS Indicator Light” in the instrument
cluster both come on when the ignition switch is turned
to the “ON” position. They should go out with the engine
running.
If the “ESP/BAS Warning Lamp” comes on
continuously with the engine running, a malfunction
has been detected in either the ESP or
the BAS system, or both. If this light remains on
after several ignition cycles, and the vehicle has been
driven several miles at speeds greater than 30 mph (48
km/h), see your authorized dealer as soon as possible to
have the problem diagnosed and corrected.

NOTE:
The ESP/TCS Indicator Light and the ESP/BAS
Warning Lamp come on momentarily each time the
ignition switch is turned ON.
Each time the ignition is turned ON, the ESP System
will be ON even if it was turned off previously.
The ESP Control System will make buzzing or clicking sounds when it is active. This is normal; the sounds will stop when ESP becomes inactive following the maneuver that caused the ESP activation.

I only turned it partially off as described above. I did not turn it fully off as I probably should have.

I've never actually turned the ESP and TCS fully off. Maybe I need to find some harder trails. =)

OK I have read the posts above twice, I have looked at it in the manual, and I have done some experimenting on my own with the three settings.
I still can't figure out what the different settings do exactly.
Maybe its me...
I understand that there are three different settings: On, Partial Off, and Full Off.
That doesn't mean anything because they mention ESP,ERM,TCS,BAS, and limited slip but none of these are explained in detail as to what they do and when they activate.
If anybody can explain their functionality I know I would totally appreciate it!!!!
As far as the modes go this is what I get the difference to be:

Full off:
ESP is off
ERM is off
TCS is off except for limited slip. (whatever that means)

Partial off:
ESP is off below 30mph
TCS is off except for limited slip. (whatever that means)

Now If I just knew what all the acronyms meant!!!!

ESP = Electonic Stability Program - a suite of sensors and programs designed to keep the vehicle stable. ERM, TCS, and BAS are part of the ESP system.


ERM = Electronic Roll Mitigation - yaw and speed detectors in the vehicle sense when a vehicle is about to roll over and attempt to stop it by changing throttle and braking on specific wheels. If you use the search you will find a thread about one member's wife experiencing this first hand... and it worked.


TCS = Traction Control System - enhances mobility and prevents wheel slip when accelerating on slippery surfaces. It also provides a measure of directional stability control -- an advancement beyond prior traction control systems. Using the wheel-speed sensors, it can detect excessive yaw and help keep the car on the intended course as, for instance, when accelerating around a curve.

BAS = Brake Assist System - detects emergency braking situations (rapid deceleration based on user slamming their foot on the brake) and applys additional braking power as well as monitors the vehicle stability to adjust braking accordingly.

ELSD = the QDII system Electronic Limited Slip Differentials. The ELSDa use electronically controlled clutch packs to automatically and instantly vary from slip to lock at each axle. This maximizes traction when needed without any of the axle hop / binding issues found in a traditional locking differential.
