Looking at '09 Overland Tomorrow

I posted this in the Commander Buying Sticky, but, heard it doesn't get much traffic, so, I'm reposting it here.

Well, this is my first post here. Looking to add a Commander to our stable of Jeeps. We need an SUV with a 3rd row, and my darling wife wants nothing to do with a minivan. We are a Jeep family, the XK will be Jeep #5 ('86 MJ, '92 YJ/CJ, '93 XJ, and my wife's '04 WJ). We are looking at an '09 Overland with everything with 76k miles for $17,600 at a Lexus dealership. What do I need to look over when we go there tomorrow? Doing the usual things, Carfax, checking maintenance records, checking out the door handles, looking for signs of leaks, ect. Nah, I haven't bought a used Jeep before! Thanks for any and all help.

Service records are most important on the XK. These Jeeps are really maintenance intensive. What ever the records say I always (I'm on XK number two) just change all the fluids.

1. Check the 4LO works by cycling it a couple of times. Their is a bad update out their.
2. Move the heat and air temps and blends around to make sure the servos are working. You don't want to hear any servo whines or loud clicking.
3. Test drive listen for drive line whines, vibrations or clicking noises.
4. Change fluid on the both diffs, transfer case, trans. Unless you have proof it was done in the last 15K. Then change them anyway.
5. Confirm what drive system your getting. quadradrive II being the best one. How to tell what drive system.
6. You can do the key dance to see if their are any DTC codes. Do a youtube search its on their.
7. Other than that do the normal used Jeep checks.

Ok, thanks! I don't believe this is 4WD/AWD, can't find info up or down on this, I see RWD in the powertrain section, so that's why I'm leaning towards 2WD. All of my Jeeps I've bought, I changed/flushed all the fluids right off the bat, for my piece of mind. I'm trying out every gizmo on the thing, even taking a DVD to try out the entertainment system. I want to make sure I'm not getting a basket case, but, with it being sold by a Lexus dealer, I would think they would have better standards then a light bulb lot, at least I'm hoping!

Their standards on used cars are same as everyone else, spend as little as possible and sell fast. You maybe be better off because the person trading it in probably could afford to keep the maintenance up but that's still a crap shoot. Just follow that link I gave you how to tell what drive system you have so you know for sure what your getting because the XK came with 3 4x4 sytems. Not sure on the MPG savings for a 2wd though their aren't that many of them on the forums at least.

RWD or the 4WD with QT1, will NOT have 4LOW, so the N23 update disabling the 4LOW would NOT be an issue.

All the 4WD systems are full time 4WD, no option to put them into 2WD, so you'll see them listed as AWD often as well. All the 4WD systems use lots of electronic control of the 4WD systems to be fairly capable off road and in bad weather, its just a matter of much more capable the higher option 4WD systems.

And just a note from a former mini-van owner, you can't beat mini-vans for most efficient use of space and best comfort in a reasonable sized vehicle on long trips. I know people hate the image, but if you have 3 kids or more and take long trips, they're kinda mandatory. If that is your family, might want to rent a mini-van for a long family trip and show your wife what she is giving up just for image.

To be honest, the Commander will be mostly used for moving my daughters and their friends around town, and a few day trips to places. The '04 Grand will still be the road trip vehicle, as it would only be us four traveling long distances. The wife told me one reason she doesn't like minivans is you can't lift them (love her). In fact, she said the Commander was really low (her Grand is up 3" and has 32" tires).

We decided against the Overland, as we couldn't get the payments where we were comfortable with the downpayment we have. I'm looking at an '06 Sport with the 4.7 and 2WD. It looks nice, and we are happy with what the payments will be, plus, in a year, we should have it paid off. Going to do the final inspection and a yay or nay on it tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's input.

I have a 2010 2wd 3.7L

MPG is better than the 4x4's. With a small lift and 32" tires (Dueler RHS A/T P255/70r18's, which are stock on JK Safari's) It averages 18mpg with plenty of around town stop and go trips.

Well done sir. My wife's preferences are very similar. She still misses her old lifted f150, which was taller than the XK.

That's good to know we really don't get info like that from the 2x2 owners to often.

As an 09 Overland owner, you can't go wrong. QDII, Hemi, 18s. It's nice vehicle. I typically prefer all leather on the steering wheel but I've gotten used to the wood accents.
