Cargo question

So I am going to need some more space for camping gear, and am torn between a roof top carrier, or one the attaches to a hitch.

I like the roof top because it looks cool, and I would probably never remove it, so it would always be available.

I like the hitch attaching style because it is not as permanent and I can get one for cheaper.

Basically i guess I am looking for feedback from anyone who has either style, and how much either style affects your gas milage both filled and empty if rooftop.

I have a factory roof pod, the larger of the two that they have in the catalog, Talked the dealer into it when I bought the Commander. I leave it on all the time and keep bedding, coats and pillows in case We ever get stuck either off road or in bad weather.
I also removed the third row seats and installed a locking aluminum storage box. The box contains several things, including a self inflating queen size air bed. With the second row seats folded down it makes for a very nice emergency bed. I do like to be comfortable when I sleep. I have not noticed any difference in gas mileage but I would caution you to watch you overhead clearence and stay out of parking garages.

I forgot to mention that I would not carry anything heavy, (like books, or tools) in the roof pod. I carry light stuff and it does not effect my center of gravity. If you carry too much weight up high you might notice it on turns and side hills off road.

I have a hitch mounted carrier....A couple drawbacks...It won't hold as much as the roof carrier and you lose your backup sensors (which I've come to use oh so often). I don't see it affecting my mileage at all and it is a breeze to put on and take off.

I've used a roof-top carrier, the enclosed older style (a-la-Sears) for our trip to AZ in January. Dropped the (4.7L) mileage from 18-19 to 15 or so; bad winter storm head winds in CA took it down to as low as 11 on one day. The return trip was ~15 again.

I like my Surco rack. It's great for camping gear and such, as it's easy to access, without having to open/unlock anything. Just strap it down, and you're good to go.

The downfall is that I noticed about 1-1.5mpg loss with the rack up there. So if mileage is important to you, you may want a different option. But if 1.5 isn't much, then I highly recommend it. There's a TON of accessories you can get for the Surco as well (spare tire holder, light brackets, shovel/axe brackets, HiLift brackets, etc).

I also have a roof rack and really like the look. I have not actually used it yet but it has some advantages over a tow hitch mounted unit. Advantages include a place to put larger tires if you upgrade since a larger tire will not fit under the XK, It also gives you a great place to mount off road lights and carry your high lift jack.

Disadantages to the hitch mount include loss of rear sensors, place to store it when not in use, parking limitiations and possible turning clearance on the trail.

I would like a roof rack, but I would hardly use it. I do have a Thule cargo bag (roof) that straps to the rack cross members. That serves we really well when I need it, and putting in on and taking it off is super easy.

Just another option...
