To Trade or Not to Trade

For those of you who are wondering whether or not its worth it - because of fuel costs - to trade in your favorite vehicle of all time (the Commander) for a wussy little fuel saving crackerjack box, the below link will give you an idea about how long you'd have to drive around looking like a trendy enviro-nut before you even break even.

The system assumes you actually own your trade-in outright, so if you want a true number, you need to add in what you owe to the price of the fuel-efficient vehicle you "want."

I did a little test run and decided to pretend to trade in my baby ('06 Limited with HEMI [which isn't even an option on their list]) for a Honda Civic Hybrid. Based on the value of the vehicles and the current price of gas, it would take me 255 months (21 1/4 YEARS) to break even on gas.

And I don't think a 4.7 bumper would go on the Civic very well.

The moral of the story is, if you are trading in your baby for a fuel efficient econobox, you probably don't deserve the XK in the first place! AND, whoever gets your lightly used XK will get a hell of a deal!

http://www.edmunds.com/calculators/gas-guzzler.html

Please be aware that my remarks should be taken with a tone of sarcasm and I really don't have anything against XK traders (traitors? ).

RIP - Silver '06 Limited; 5.7 Hemi; 2" TerraFlex Lift; 255/70R17 Bridgestone Dueler REVOS, Horizontal Inclinometer, Signal Frog Antenna Ball, Surco Safari 50"x50" Roof Rack, GetLost4x4 bumper, Bulldog 9k Winch, GetLost4x4 Rock Rails - (should have added a snorkel)

They do not have the 5.7 Hemi, but If I were to trade my commander for a 2008 smart it states I would save $47.30 per month. Guess I will have to own both!

Haha thats halarious! I feel bad for all the old commander owners who have recently traded in their commanders for a more fuel efficient vehicle.

Same here. I did the calcs with my BMWs in the mix and it would take me 117 months (9.5 years) to break even again. So guess what, I'm keeping my XK and getting rid of my BMWs for one convertible BMW for her.

2006 XK Sport, 4.7l, QTII- many mods

Right, but how long would it take for you to break even? The calculation assumes you are trading your gas guzzler for an econobox. I guess it would be possible to have more value in a used gas guzzler than the new econobox costs outright, so in that case, someone could walk away from a trade with cash in his pocket and better fuel economy, which would mean saving money from day one.

However, if you decide to keep your gas guzzler and purchase a Smart as an additional vehicle, then the calculations are a bit different. Assuming approximatley $15,000 for the purchase price of the Smart, you would have to calculate the difference in fuel economy between the Smart and your Commander and divide that number by the amount of miles driven annually (average). Then you'd have to calculate the amount of money saved using $4.00 (or whatever today's gas prices are in your area) to figure out when you would break even. I suspect it would be at least five years, assuming gas prices hover around the $4.00/gallon mark.

Basically if you can afford to have the appearence of "green" go for it. Personally its not me I am scared to death in those tin cans. Nothing more humbling then a sitting at the level of a semi's lug nuts.

I read somewhere and would of posted the link however I didnt want to he dragged across the coals for finding articles that did not agree with populist thinking. A guy estamated that if you purchased a hybrid over a basic econo box you would have to buy 10,000 gallons of gas a year to make up the difference in cost due the hybrids extra costs like insurance.
