2006 Jeep Commander Transmission Clunk

I know this is not the introduction forum, but read on and you'll know why I started here. Well, I guess there's no better time than now to introduce myself. I'm from Northern Michigan. I've owned two WJ's and been around Jeeps for quite some time. We traded our 2004 Chrysler Pacifica in on our 2006 Jeep Commander 65th Anniversary Edition with the 3.7l V6 engine 4wd with QuadraTrac I.

Well, I hate to say that my first post is bad news about our new to us 2006 Jeep Commander. We just got the Commander two weeks ago and didn't even drive it the first 10 days we owned it as we went out of town and left it home. The first day we actually drove it after we got home, I found an oil leak, tranny leak, the famous Commander whistle/hum noise from windshield or moon roof, and also a transmission clunk. Well, I found out today after calling the dealer, the leaks and windshield issues have been repaired, but the transmission clunk is more serious. Apparently, the input shaft has too much end play and it needs to be replaced. The dealer told me they had to remove the transmission and they were going to do the work at no cost to me. I do have an extended warranty on it, plus it's still on the dealer 30 day 100% dealer parts and labor warranty.

Now to my question, has anyone else had the oil/transmission leaks or the transmission clunk? Can I expect to have any future problems related to this tranmission problem?

Thanks
CSIJeep

Could you describe your transmission clunk in more detail??

I have one specifically when you put the Commander in/out of 'Park'.

I have been told that I am just overprotective of my XK, too.

Here it is right from my email to the dealer.

Quote:
We are getting a clunking noise in the drivetrain. For example it occurs when coasting up to a stop light, then push the accelerator to take off. I had a Grand Cherokee that did this exact same thing and it was a sticky slip yoke. That was replaced and the problem went away. I'm not sure if it's the same issue on the Commander, but it sounds exactly the same.
They had it since last Thursday night. So far they fixed the leaks and the windshield/moonroof hum/buzz. Today, I call them and they tell me it's the transmission input shaft. I don't get the clunk when shifting like you, but the dealer did tell me these also have a tendancy for ujoint problems. Ujoints do tend to clunk when shifting, but I'm not sure it's your issue.

robo, I have this problem and it is really loud when the vehicle is on an incline or decline. I have spoken with the service manager at the dealership where I bought the vehicle and he said that that was "normal". The more that I think about it the more mad I am getting so I will bring it to another dealership. We have another Jeep dealership close by, and I am going to see what that sevice manager has to say.

Well, finally we got our Commander back. I received the repair order and the final bill was $2698.05, but we did not have to pay any of it. As a matter of fact, our first payment is coming up due this week, and the dealer offered to make our first payment for us.
Oil leak - Crank shaft seal - $52.35
Tranny leak - Transmission connector leaking - $399.34
Whistle/hum noise from windshield - Replace rubber seal/add adhesive TSB - $37.50
Transmission clunk - transmission output shaft and coupler stripped - $1610.86
Rental car - $280.00
Rental car gas - $50.00
First payment - $268.00
Total = $2698.05
Overall, I've got to say this is the best dealer that I have ever delt with and when they talk customer service before and after the sale, they really mean it. They communicated awesome and were very apologetic. The owner even called me and apologized and offered to make out first payment for us. This is a 5 Star Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealer. This is the way customer service and loyalty was ment to be. Everyone I dealt with on this from the salesman, serviceman and owner were all great people. You don't find may around like this any more.

What dealer is this? We all need to patronize them if possible.

Hi csijeep,

Truth be known, there are far more good dealers than we admit to.

Trouble is, the ashwipes out there are more memorable and make every dealer suspect.

We probably should be as quick to congratulate as we are to complain when the experience, such as your's, is so very favorable.

Glad to hear all is well and happy wheeling!

Rob
