Unhappy Jeeps in Oz

Hey guys , do you know what sucks? We cant get this wicked car in Australia, at least not yet! I was never a fan of Jeep, till I accidently logged on to the official site, and saw the new Commander. 'Twas love at first sight! I am currently behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Pajero, and until last week my dream was a Volkswagon Touareg V10. I need a 7 seater for my family, and the range of these over here is rather small. But do you know the worst thing? If and when we ever get them they will retail for about $90-$120k here! I am basing this on the difference in most SUV's from you to us, ie F350's and whatever. This means that unless I win Lotto or something the odds of me actually getting my hands on one is quite small. Oh, well, I am still a fan that is why I joined. I can still admire them from afar, and drool over all your photos.

Re: Jeeps in Oz

So that's why I had to sign a paper saying I wasn't going to export my new Commander, I don't remember signing that when we bought our 02 GC & my 03 Liberty, but now that I dig back in my ailing memory, yea we did sign something. That does suck. The rear seats are good for kids, but not adults.

Re: Jeeps in Oz

Thanks for letting me know that, Mango. My dream of finding a way around the system by importing one myself just bit the dust! When you say the rear seats are small, is that both rows or the rearmost only? Both kids are in baby/toddler seats at the moment, but long term I will need something bigger. It also will need to be able to ferry around the friends, grandparents, etc.

Re: Jeeps in Oz

The rear (last row) seats are not small, they are regular size. Who ever gets in the rear seats has to climb over the folded down center row seat to get there which is fun for the kids. I went and sat in the seats, they are comfortable, it'a a very good choice for a family. Plus there are temp/fan control controls in the last row seats also which make it really nice. I would think the rear seats will be good for any age, you wouldn't want to put Grandma & Grandpa back there. I would definately buy the Commander over the Frd or Chevy any day.
The cool thing about the rear seats is the stadium seating effect, they are sitting up a bit so they have a better view of everything. I'll take a pic of me getting in the rear seats if your interested.

Re: Jeeps in Oz

Back to the issue about signing a paper acknowledging I won't export the vehicle. When we bought our 02 Grand Cherokee outright without a loan, I don't think we had to sign that paper. It might be only if theres a loan involved. We will research it and let you know.

Re: Jeeps in Oz

Thanks Mango. Once again I appreciate you letting me know, I also appreciate these specs you have posted. I think it would be a laugh actually, getting the Grannys to crawl over the middle row! I was talking to hubby about the agreement you had to sign, his theory was that it may have been an emissions issue. We have different legislation here, so that could have something to do with it. I certainly have not seen any advertising for the Commander, so we may NEVER have them here. Personally, I dont think this is it m'self, as we still have F350's. (eeeeeewww)

Re: Jeeps in Oz

You are allowed to have guns under licence. Mostly this means farmers and people like that. You are also allowed to have a gun for personal protection under licence, but the VAST majority of Australians dont. It is mostly the criminal element that has them. It's not something that is all that necessary here. We had a big hand-in of all automatics and semi-automatics about 8 years ago, after someone went beserk in a small town in Tasmania and killed 35 people, mostly people eating a cafe, their kids etc. Because this was because the murderer had a semi-automatic, this brought in the new law. I may be naive here, but from what I see most Aussies are happy not to have guns around. We dont have a whole lot of gun deaths here, and that suits me fine!
