Don't know what to do, HELP!!

Hey guys,

I have a sort of generalized question, but directly related to my Commander.

I have an '06 Commander that I believe the engine seized on it. I had it paid off, but we took out a title loan on it to pay a couple of collections off. So now, I owe 7k on the title loan, but have this Commander sitting here not running. I've already bought new vehicles for my wife and I, so I really don't need to fix it.

But I'd really hate for it to go unused, just wasted. I made a post on Craigslist to sell it for parts, but nobody is biting even at $1500 because I can't secure the title. If I put myself in the buyers prospective, I completely understand not wanting to buy a vehicle because I can't obtain the title, but I thought I would have someone interested in it for parts or as an off-roader (not street registered).

I won't have the loan paid off for 19 months, and I wonder if it would even sell after sitting there for 2 years.

Any thoughts? I thought about listing it on this site for sale, but I wanted some discussion first.

Without a title, you CAN'T sell it...well, at least not legally. With a title loan, your vehicle is the collateral against the loan just as if you purchased it from a dealer. If you default, they take possesion of the vehicle to cover their loan. In most states selling, transferring, or concealing the location of property that has a lien is a felony. The loan company has a legal claim to that vehicle, so even if you did find someone to buy it from you, and you defaulted on the loan, it would still be seized regardless of who has possession of it. Not to sound harsh, but I doubt if anyone would go anywhere near your vehicle until you pay off that title loan. (Just for reference, I'm not a lawyer but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn before )

Are you sure it is seized and not repairable short of a new block.

Um, I don't know it it's worth paying off now. Might just let it go if it's collateral.

But if you want to do it right you can sell it in 19 months depending on the which model it is you might do better on the price, thing is the trade in value on the base models are dropping quick not sure what the Craig's list price would be in essentially another two years with a bad motor. But if the body is not rusted there will be somebody like me who'd take a chance on it even with all the issues of a car sitting for too long.

Is the engine really seised? could be something simple like a starter.

This about sums it up - not to mention that if you sold it and defaulted on the title loan, you'd wind up going to jail on a laundry list of charges.

And I was a Deputy Sheriff for 12 years, so, I have some experience in this area.

Ok, wow, great advice. I didn't know that it was a felony to even sell it. I'm not trying to do anything illegal, so I removed the Craigslist listing.

Guess I'll tarp it and leave it be for a couple years! Maybe I'll call the lender place and see if they want to take possession of it and reduce the value of the loan.

I dunno what I'm doing, this just sucks, really want this Jeep to be gone, wanted it gone for years, been nothing but a pain in the butt!!!

Alright, well I'll work on the lender and see how I can get rid of it, thanks for all the help guys.

I'm fairly certain it's seized. While my wife was driving it on the high way, it started jerking horribly almost causing a crash with my 2 kids in it, I thought it was the transmission at first, the way she described it, but then it got towed home, I opened the hood...there's no oil in it and it smells completely burnt up, like a combination of burnt oil and burn metal (piston rings welded??). The starter tries to turn, but only clicks.

At this point, it's not worth putting any money into it, because I'll be dropping $2000 in a new engine, just for it to sit there for 2 years because I still can't sell it because I can't secure the title.

I don't know how your note is worded but I doubt the terms are fair .
Did a google search it seems even if you default and they get the jeep but can't resell it for what you own they may still go after for the balance and other fees they can think of.
Talking to them may help get better terms for settling, but if they are loan sharks... I doubt they'll be understanding. Honestly I have no experience with title or payday loans.

Which motor does your commander have?
If you do sell it in a few years it will probably only get a few thousand as it sits, it is going to be somebody who is willing to take a risk buying the jeep cheap the putting thousands up for the motor and 30-40 hours of labor getting it road worthy again.

Honestly, once the loan is paid off, I wouldn't care what it sold for. I'd probably ask for $2,000 and take $1,000 just for it to be gone.

As far as the loan, it's from a place like Springleaf. It was a bad deal, but we had to take it. Hated it, they front loaded the interest, high interest rate, it's awful.

I know they wouldn't get rid of the loan, but if they would take it and drop $2,000 off the loan I'd be really happy with that. But no, the loan won't disappear if I do a voluntary repo, I just want a bit knocked off the loan.

Or I let it sit and gamble that the jeep would even sell for $1-2,000 after it's been sitting for 2 years.

Thanks for all the advice and help.

IMO It should be worth 1-2000 easily if the body is good. Not wrecked or rusted out.
Plenty of shade tree mechanics will take a chance on fixing it for profit or personal use.
