Spare tire winch replacement options

So my spare tire winch finally died on me last weekend. Now it just grinds and bits and pieces fall out when trying to raise the tire. I see there are very few bolts holding it on so should be easy enough to replace.

The question is should I spring for a new one? Best price found $157 shipped
Or should I try my luck to find one locally at a junk yard? Unsure of what they would charge if they had one in stock or available to pick and pull.

I am guessing I may run into the very same problem after a few uses with a used one and will have to get another one anyway but wasn't sure if anyone had any luck with getting a secondhand one from a junk yard or used parts yard.

$157 shipped was the best price I could find for OEM replacement and that was ebay. Stowing my spare in the cargo area for now but I am sure that will get really old very soon.

2007 Commander in Missouri where we have salty winters and wet Springs.

Thanks in advance.

If you are going to replace it, I'd get a new one.

The original one lasted this long, so, why buy someone else's used garbage?

Good point. I was leaning that direction as well. I guess I just needed to hear it from someone else to confirm it.

Or go to www.detoursusa.com and get a knucklebone hitch tire carrier! I'll be getting one soon with an alternative recovery point.

I've seen similar models to this before.

The problem is it block's the back-up camera and you have to move your license plate.

The license plate isn't a big deal but I won't sacrifice my back-up camera's functionality.

Spare tire winch replacement options

Yeah they can make a license plate relocation. I never use my back up camera lol ever. I still turn around. Relocating back up camera isn't too had either since all of the wiring is done.

I've kicked around hitch-mounted spare tire carriers for a while.

The more I've thought about it, the less I like the idea.

If I ever move my spare tire, it will probably be when/if I have a custom rear bumper made.

If I do decide to go that route, I'd have a rear bumper made with a spare tire mount that swings outward.

I actually may throw one on the roof rack for now. I like that look. It's kind of an Overland style. I can't fit in any parking garages anyway. Best part about that is I save a ton of money and I can get a snorkel instead

You have a good point in there! A new tire is advisable than replacing it with an old one. You should consider the tread wear and the prolong life of your tire. Most of the time, the tread of a replacement is already uneven or has irregular wear. You should check on that.
